WANTED: 54 cm or so CROSS BIKE
Can't Post
I want to purchase my first cross bike. I don't expect to race much, mostly mixed riding on gravel, fire roads, and pavement. I would prefer a frame / fork but would consider a complete bike as well. I am just a shade under 6' with a 32" inseam so a 54 - 56 cm TT seems about right.
Thanks all,
robert

If your 6 ft tall your going to want a 56, 57, or 58 cm 'cross bike. You usually want the bike a little bigger than your normal road bike.

I would disagree on the sizing.
Personally, I think a slightly smaller bike frame for cross is better for newbies. With a longer wheelbase, different geometry, it will feel pretty different than a road bike.
But I would agree, a 54 is too small for your height. go get a fit.
my 10 cents.

No, if anything, you would want a little smaller. I'm just under 6'1" on a 54 Fuji. Bottom brackets are generally higher on cross bikes making the geometry different.
Unless you guys have seen him in person, you have no idea on what he needs. Just like a TT bike. Bob Duncan, a well known fitter scoffed when I told him I was 6'1" on a 56cm road bike and 110 stem. Until he fit me. His fit kit came up exactly the same measurements as I was riding. His comment: "Well I guess that's why we do fittings instead of going by height now, isn't it?"
You need to look at top tube length, which is what he's doing. My 56 Fuji road bikes have a TT of 55.1cm, and my 54cm Fuji cross bike has a TT of 55.3cm. A 56 cross bike would have a longer TT than my 56 road bike. It's all in the sizing.

A close friend is selling a GREAT bike which you may want to consider. Here are the details:
This was Jesse Anthony's (multi-time National Champion in CCX) PIT BIKE in 2005. My friend bought it following the season and it's been hanging in his garage ever since. Here are the details:
Ridley Supercross Frame (Aluminum with Carbon Stays)--Size 54cm
ZXU Carbon Fork
Ritchey WCS Bars (44cm)
Ritchey WCS Stem (11 cm)
Campagnolo Chorus 10-Speed Ergo Levers
Empella Froglegs Cantilever Brakeset (Silver)
Campy Centaur Front Derailleur
Campy Chorus Rear Derailleur (with Carbon Cage)
Ritchey WCS Seatpost
Fizik Arione Ti Saddle
FSA Cranks or Race Face Next LP (with Carbon Inserts) Crankset
Mavic Askium (2007) wheelset (less than 500 miles)
Campy Chorus 12-25 cassette (other options possible)
Michelin Mud 2 Tires
Newer cables/housing
This bike has NO DENTS/DINGS. It is in excellent condition and ready to race.
$1400 complete
For an additional $500, he'll include a pair of Mavic Ksyrium SSC SL Tubulars with Challenge Griffo tires glued on. He might have a pair of Ksyrium SSC SL Clinchers for the same price if the buyer prefers clinchers.
Contact me if interested. Feel free to forward this to others interested in a SWEET CCX rig.
The bike is in Virginia, but he'll have it packed and shipped quickly to the buyer.

I think you are mistaken.
After 8 seasons of CCX racing, I've always found that same size/slightly smaller is optimal due to the higher BB height (and taller head tube) typical on CCX bikes.
Smaller bikes are also lighter to portage.
