Allies Ask Obama to Make ‘Hope’ Specific Can't Post

Oh my gosh! The sky is falling! Fellow Democrats asking Obama to be more specific. I feel like I must have gone to another universe as these are the same things I'm asking of Obama. Furthermore, contrary tot he esteemed Mr. Tibbs, even Democrats are seeing this as a much tighter contest.

Seeing Tougher Race, Allies Ask Obama to Make ‘Hope’ Specific

http://www.nytimes.com/...olitics/17elect.html
By PATRICK HEALY

As Senator Barack Obama prepares to accept the Democratic presidential nomination next week, party leaders in battleground states say the fight ahead against Senator John McCain looks tougher than they imagined, with Mr. Obama vulnerable on multiple fronts despite weeks of cross-country and overseas campaigning.

These Democrats — 15 governors, members of Congress and state party leaders — say Mr. Obama has yet to convert his popularity among many Americans into solutions to crucial electoral challenges: showing ownership of an issue, like economic stewardship or national security; winning over supporters of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton; and minimizing his race and experience level as concerns for voters.

Mr. Obama has run for the last 18 months as the candidate of hope. Yet party leaders — while enthusiastic about Mr. Obama and his state-by-state campaign operations — say he must do more to convince the many undecided Democrats and independents that he would address their financial anxieties rather than run, by and large, as an agent of change — given that change, they note, is not an issue.

“I particularly hope he strengthens his economic message — even Senator Obama can speak more clearly and specifically about the kitchen-table, bread-and-butter issues like high energy costs,” said Gov. Ted Strickland of Ohio. “It’s fine to tell people about hope and change, but you have to have plenty of concrete, pragmatic ideas that bring hope and change to life.”

Or, in the blunter words of Gov. Phil Bredesen, Democrat of Tennessee: “Instead of giving big speeches at big stadiums, he needs to give straight-up 10-word answers to people at Wal-Mart about how he would improve their lives.”

As I've said in the past, between a penchant for identity politics, and Obama's smooth oratories, the dems picked the absolute weakest of their lot. There were a few that were strong, and with whom the dems would be winning easily at this point. That said, he may pull Biden in as veep, and Biden has a strong resume.

Biden has never impressed me, ever. It gets me that someone who was guilty of plagarism in law school, can get on national tv and lecture supreme court nominees. I don't think Biden is even on Obama's long list.

The more I think about it, the stronger the Hillary/Obama ticket looks. Hillary is good at putting out proposals. I actually liked her Iraq solution. Obama is good at oratory. Hillary pitches and Obama closes the sale. Obama doesn't need experience for the VP slot and charisma in a VP goes a long way. Look no further than Dan Quail.

I think the Democrats screwed the pooch on this one. I wonder if any of them will hold it against Hillary if Obama loses the national election, because she farmed a supposedly sure thing Dem nomination.

Just rambling here folks, thinking outloud. Nothing to see. Move along, move along.

As long as we are just thinking out loud, is it too late for Hillary? The Supers are still out there and aren't counted until the fat lady sings (so to speak).

Well, since you asked ... I thought it quite curious how Hillary seemed to angle her campaign concession to Barack, like their was something in play. Then, this week, she wins a delegate roll call at the convention. And she and Bill are giving speeches up front. And, she has said something during the campain about delegates not being bound, blah, blah, blah. So, at this point, I would say nothing is impossible. I may just have to watch a few nights of the convention.

Realistically? I don't think Hillary is that Machiavellian to pull it off, and Obama that big of a chump to get played that bad. But it could be fun to watch. ;-)

I think the insurgency is well underway. Is there some specific reason that bunch of Dem leaders had to speak as a group? Brokered convention indeed.

Well, if you are going to put it in those terms, my impression, given who those Dm leaders are:

party leaders in battleground states say the fight ahead against Senator John McCain looks tougher than they imagined, with Mr. Obama vulnerable on multiple fronts despite weeks of cross-country and overseas campaigning.

is that this is the latest version of the Katrina game, point the finger of blame at someone else for a coming catastrophe. For Katrina, the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana waited until after the hurricane to point the fingers. As a result they both got tarred badly on the national stage.

This election was supposedly looking like a runaway for Obama until he went to Iraq and Europe. Nothing has been working well since then. (Don't ask me why, I don't have a clue about campaigns.) Perhaps these party leaders in these key battle ground states don't want the fingers of blame pointing at them saying that they dropped the ball come November and Obama doesn't win.

This conversation has brought to mind an old movie classic, in black and white, and from the mid fifties I think, about an old fashion national nomination and convention where candidates were still picked in backrooms done with deals.

I have to figure out what that movie was and go watch it again. Anybody have the name of it on their fingertips and save me a google search?

mmmm, I think either side would rather win with a bunch of platitudes. People have heard enough of the generic terms "hope" and "change", and are starting to say "where's the beef?". This group of dems just recognizes it and wants to steer Obama into what they think is a winning strategy. It gets tricky when you have to get more specific, so it could help or hurt Obama. I still can't believe that the dems aren't just running away with this.

What are you talking about? That was no movie, that was real life.

We added color in 1980. Otherwise, same same.

Found it!

The Best Man (1964) Henry Fonda, Cliff Robertson

From the synopsis, it sounds more relevent than ever! Kind of covers both parties in one movie.

I thought he was guilty of plagiarism in campaign speeches? Which, according to wikipedia, he used the lines several times with proper attribution but was caught on camera without giving credit.

The campaign incident opened up the can of worms as I recall. Here is a quick reference to the law school report. I need more time to dig out the original story:
