Bush not exactly doing nothing about Georgia Can't Post

Two other countries heard from in response to Russian invasion of Georgia. In addition to Poland agreeing to all missile interceptors to be based there, we now have Ukraine agreeing to be part of a missile defense shield and threatening to create problems for the Russian navy's use of a port

We also have Germany supporting Georgia's entry into NATO

which seems like the least they can do since they and France are the ones who got it off the track in the first place.

Andrewmc, is this all still "nothing" but vacuous words in your book?

We've been engaged there for a while. Interesting article, mostly on the other area that Russia will probably take, Abkhazia, in a recent Economist mag. Anywho, there was this tidbit on the our involvement recently when the two sides almost went to war in the May timeframe:

"Diplomatic intervention by Europe and America staved it off, but tensions remain high."

The U.S. response has been extremely WEAK. At this moment there should be U.S. fighter jets at the airport in Tbilisi, U.S. warships should be enroute to the coast of Georgia and a large civilian and military aid package proposal on the steps of Congress. To assert that Bush is responsible for Ukraine or Poland’s boldness is unrealistic and a fantastic leap. I saw Sec. Rice this morning on Meet the Press and it is very evident that she is steaming over this issue so I can only hope that the Bush administration is holding their cards. The Europeans are looking for leadership and this is the time. We blink at our peril.

Who should we blame for our poor and basically non-existent response to the Georgia event? A person who hasn't been elected president and has no authority over anything foreign or domestic?
