McCain's veep pick...according to CNN its...
Can't Post
pro choice former Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge.
http://cnnwire.blogs.cnn.com/
That'll make Vitus and the base happy
...plus anyone thats on a "no fly" list is probably a lock for Obama as well. ;-)
If this is true...and Ridge's wikipedia page has just undergone a big clean up which makes it look like it might be... McCain is playing state math and thinks he needs PA to win. Ridge doesn;t really bring anything to the table that McCain doesn;t already have. Military veteran, law and order, candidate standard stuff. All he brings to the ticket is PA.
I think this highlights McCain's VP quandry. He's an old man with health issues so his VP has to be someone who doesn't have to learn on the job...i.e. another old man just like him. It limits his choices somewhat. Cuts out people like Jindal or Fiorina.
If it is Ridge, will the base abandon McCain and stay at home?

As much as I wish that were true, it would kill his chances as the conservative base would stay home.
My $$ is on Mitt, which brings its own set of problems as the majority of Americans find him a loathsome individual.

The problem with that pick is that McCain finds him
more
loathsome than most Americans.

I am part of the base. This has no affect on me. I am not happy with McCain but given the choice of him or Barry, its a no brainer. I will vote for McCain. It is sad that I have to vote for somebody I don't like, but its the far lesser of 2 evils in my opinion.

a brilliant choice and i love that big tent. remember romney was pro choice up until a few years ago. i'd rather have one with the courage of his convictions, which defines the old pasty skinned pow guy as well.

It wouldn't be the first Pres./Veep. combo that weren't "inline" personally or ideolgically. I think that is actually a good thing. Another big plus if this is true is that he is not grabbing someone from the Senate pool. 2 former senators running for executive seats doesn't sit well with me for some reason.

If someone came to the realization that abortion is not justifiable, wouldn't the courage of one's convictions require that they say so? I really don't get why people beat up on this guy for seeing the light, so to speak, assuming he's sincere in his claims. It's one thing to question his sincerity, but more often than not, it seems he's criticized for simply holding a different view at one point in time.

True, Reagan and Bush 1 apparently had little time for eachother, but I think this dymanic is a little different. McCain knows he's a one term candidate...perhaps even a half a termer. I don't see him handing the White House to a guy he hates.

i agree but when the epiphany occurs with a transition from governor of a liberal state to seeking higher office while trying garner the conservative vote it becomes a tad too convenient. i have faulted mccain for the hyperextended pandering too but his overall record suggests he is less guilty than most pols. the biggest draw to mccain, and ridge for that matter, is having the courage to remain true to their core beliefs at the expense of politics.

I believe they'll look at the polls, and if it looks like Florida is easier to win than Minnesota than Pawlenty has a shot.

Did this Marxist dick MattinSF just put up a phoney post? The link seems like just more speculation, yet his subject line states it as a fact. Do I have the wrong link?

Yeah, of course. It comes down to a judgement call about the sincerity of that shift in opinion. Personally, I don't trust that Romney has ever been sincere about anything in his political life.

I think that's unlikely, but then again it doesn't matter what I think.
Ridge is a nice moderate, but being pro-choice pisses off millions of evangelicals. You add onto that the fact that he's got nearly zero charisma and that a lot of Americans associate him with the idiotic threat color system and duct tape, and it sounds like a strange pick. On the other hand, if he can deliver PA, then perhaps it makes sense. But McCain has already floated his name as a trial balloon and reportedly the pushback was pretty serious, and given that McCain has pretty much abandoned his "maverick" instincts, I strongly doubt that he's recovering them right now.

I know the selection process was different, but I was actually thinking of President John Adams and Vice-President Thomas Jefferson. I am quite certain there are several combinations we could come up with if we tried hard enough.

I hope it's not Ridge. He lives in my neighborhood and that would make my life hell for the next four years :-)
As a PA resident I don't think he could deliver the state. I like him, but are(should be) better options for McCain.

He has had 4 bouts of malignant melanoma so I'm sure he is taking that very possibility into account when he picks a VP. He is not going to pick a guy he hates to fill his shoes.
