Passing of man's best friend Can't Post

I got the call at 5:51 am this morning. The first dog that I ever been a part of my life with had passed on in the night. Amber would have been 14 this October. She was a wedding gift that the ex and I had gotten for ourselves. She was a very happy, fun-loving golden retreiver and had just spent the past weekend camping and riding in a canoe with the ex and our 2 kids. My son,8 in October, is having a very difficult time with it. He is upset that he didn't get to say good bye and is going to miss having her sleep on his bed, as well as under it. He told me that he felt bad that he had mistreated her when he was younger. When he was 3, he had a tendency to pull her tail until she firmly reminded him with pressure from her teeth, that that was not going to continue. My daughter, just turned 5 this weekend, doesn't seem to really grasp the whole thing. She went through the motions of what the rest of us were doing, but without outward expressions of sadness. Her "sister" dog Zoee will miss her companion as well. They had the best romping, chasing and dominance asserting games two dogs could have.

Some of the things I will remember about her are her:
-Her never ending love of shredding paper and stuffed toys, be it wrapping paper or a new stuffed duck that would be quickly beheaded
-The speed with which she could destroy a nylabone, open up a new one and it had the possibility of being a dangerous sharp stubby arrow in a few days
-Her love of fetching, no matter how tired she was or even if she had hurt herself, she would want to fetch more
-Her speed in shredding the cover off a tennis ball so that she could chomp the remainder in half, or give her a raquetball for fetch and she would fetch it once but never want to give it up.
-When playing fetch in the water, no matter what you threw, she would bring it back to shore drop it and hover. As soon as you tried to get it to throw again, she would grab it and run from you. Drop, repeat.
-How she loved to eat snow balls. Throw them and she would fly through the air to catch them. She once dug a snowman to nothing, as it was just a giant snowball to her.
-Her love of water and the time we were walking her off leash and she came upon a giant mud puddle. She stood in the middle of it and looked at us. We shouted "Amber, no!!!" but she lay down in it anyway to become a chocolate lab.
-The time one when we were playing scrabble later than usual and she wandered down the hallway from the bedroom, looked at us and began barking, to remind us it was past time for bed.

There are so many great memories of her, it makes me happy to think of them.

Amber, you will be missed, rest in peace, and if there is a dog heaven, I know what you will be doing.

Love,

Dad

Amber is lying down here with Zoee

Sorry to hear that, such a hard thing. Always there and happy as hell to see you even if you forgot to feed em.

I think this saying sums it up well " Put your spouse and your dog in the trunk for an hour, then see which one is happy to see you."

Had to put this guy down not too long ago. Wanted to shoot my self after they injected him and he crawled across the room and put his head in my lap.

Jeff, my heart goes out to you & the fam. We have a yellow labbie named Jay who takes a couple of laps in the pool, then a roll in the dirt, then a couple of laps in a cloudy pool, repeat throughout the day. The worst is the final lap/mudbath before coming inside ... he runs & hides when the great american washdown is imminent. you gotta sit down & wait him out. love that big old yellow aggravating dog! hard to handle thinking of his demise. my thoughts are with you.

Jeff,

Wish you hadn't joined this club. You may have seen my posts last month when I lost bot of my Golden's within three weeks. I think last month was one of the worst ever, but time heals; even as the love for your furry friend continues. My seven year olds have understood the situation and been far less upset than I expected.

Hopefully you have already seen the Rainbow Bridge poem, but in case you haven't I hope you and the kids can appreciate the words....

http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
