Russia blocks U.N. Security Council draft on Georgia Can't Post

Well here is a surprise, Russia blocking U.N. Security Council actions regarding Georgia. This was Obama's initial go to answer for the Georgian crisis.

As suggested initially, it speaks to a significant lack of understanding of international affairs. I do hope his VP choice brings something to the table in this department.

Not sure why. News articles tonight say NATO pulled its punches with respect to actions towards Russia by not including all the requests/demands by the U.S.

Might make Russia think twice before parking its tanks over the border.

Kind of raises the question does the U.S. play world cop because it steps up and assumes the role, or does everyone else just take a step back when someone else asks for volunteers.

NATO pulls its punches on penalty against Russia

http://news.yahoo.com/...oqlVFjfr.mDxAhtbbBAF

BRUSSELS, Belgium – NATO pulled its punches against Russia on Tuesday, suspending formal contacts as punishment for the Georgia invasion but bucking U.S. pressure for more severe penalties.

The Russian ambassador to NATO played down the impact of the emergency meeting of the Western alliance.

"The mountain gave birth to a mouse," said Dmitry Rogozin.

This blocking by Russia is part of a long-standing thumb-in-your-eyes effort by Russia to thwart the US in the security council.

Petulance, from gas pipelines to Georgia. All seems part of an attempt to stir the nationalist element in Russia - take poor people's mind off the mass corruption and enrichment of the new csars.

In advance of Obama's pick, is there anyone he would pick where you would admit it is a brilliant choice?

Yet another indication that the UN is completely irrelevant.

I was going to say that Obama's irrelevant too, but that wouldn't be accurate......let's just say that he's ignorant and leave it at that.

I don't even have a clue as to who a good pick for McCain would be. Most of the Republican names floated around are pretty much unfamiliar to me with the exception of Ridge. I've heard Pawlenty (sp?) several times, but I know nothing about him so far. Good thing I'm not on the selection committee.

As for Obama, I was very surprised when people here in the LR mentioned Biden as respected for his foreign affairs accumen. I've not heard much about that, and I've watched Biden off and on for the last 20+ years. I'm not impressed by anything from him to date.

Lightning strike me dead, (given that this is Matt's guy) but I think Richardson (N.M. gov) might be interesting. Problem there is that would be two minorites on the ticket, and no female. Not quite appealing to the group hug Dems, and all us racist Republicans. Again, I don't know what his international strengths are.

Color me clueless at this point.

While I doubt it will have much effect, getting Russia to block the proposition within the UN does serve a minor effect of making it clear to the rest of the UN that Russia doesn't give two shakes about the UN. Might be of some minor use in future UN negotiations?

Pawlenty or Pawpaw as we call him up here, would be a great choice.

He is solid conservative, more so that McCain, great speaker, and sticks to his guns on important stuff much more than most politician.

He opposed tax increases (fiddled at the edges with some fee increases) but pretty much held his ground.

The Red Star aka Pravda on the Mississippi aka Star Tribune news paper hates his guts which is another thing he has going for him.

here is how it works.

Europe huffs and puffs, does nothing, requiring the US to do the heavy lifting, allowing the Euros to complain that the US acted unilaterally.

Sounds familiar?

Richardson has real issues with improper behaviour towards staff, unlikely choice.

He also has to pick someone who has not been in Washington long to make it stick he wants to change things but at the same time, will get massacred if he brings someone with little experience.

I would agree that paints Obama pretty much into a corner, particularly if you are looking for someone with experience. At least for foreign affairs, it seems like you can go to academia or the diplomatic corp for semi- "outsiders".

I think the key to his pick, though, is what is his agenda. My impression is that he wants to, or is going to, focus on almost entirely domestic issues. In that event, for his purposes, he may need less of an international expert.

It still raises the question of getting an insider or not. It is really tough to change things if you're an outsider looking in. It seems he will get flak on his choice either way.

Experienced = Insider (no change choice), Outsider = Inexperienced (not qualified for the job).

Gee, maybe I should look into running campaign strategy. ;-)
