The perfect sporting weekend Can't Post

I was camping this weekend up in Markleeville. Beautiful place you oughta go there and bring your bike. Anyway I brought mine and Friday morning hopped on to ride to the top of Carson Pass....actually a little further, to Caples Lake. Tough damn climb at that altitude and I dunno how people do that Death Ride.

On the way down I stopped a couple of times in Hope valley to scope out good fishing spots on the Carson River.

Saturday morning I was up at 5 am and on the river with a thermos of coffee and my new fly rod by 6am. I was back in camp by 9am with two beautiful rainbow trout that were grilled that evening for dinner.

Can't think of a better way to spend a weekend.

jeez give a guy some time I just got home last night!

We stayed at Grover Hot Springs campground, which I highly recommend...though the springs themselves are really swimming pools and $5 entry is a bit steep.

Sounds cool. I don't have the patience for fishing, but I have always liked the idea of fishing. If I were to fish, it would have to be shore fishing (or fly fishing) as I can't be in a boat for more than a couple of minutes without ruining the next 2 days of my life.

Nothing better than a good trout stream at dawn!

What were you using? What kind of fly rod?

Agree.....pics. BTW, those 2 rainbows make a great breakfast too!

I just got back from a very similar week fishing the Madison River in MT...can't think of a better way to spend a recovery week.

18"-25" browns abound, mountain scenery, fresh air...*sigh*

I was advised by some folk here to pick up a Sage rod but I baulked at the price...when I buy nice stuff I need to know I'm going to get a lot of use out of it and the fly fishing hobby is experimental at the minute...so I picked up a $50 combo package at Big 5 Sporting goods and a couple of cannis nymphs at the Markleeville General Store that were recommended.

I haven't cast a fly since I was about 17 so I did spend quite a bit of time getting my leader out of the brush.

The river was absolutely full of 6-8 inch trout and I threw about 3 back along with the two I kept. Beginners luck I guess.

I have 2 Sage's and they're great, but you know, I'll bet that river was just as pretty and the trout taste just as good caught with that $50 fly rod!

Good on ya!
