a long time ago, I had a game called "Aces of the pacific" is was a dog-fighting game (not to be confused with michael vic) and you could choose all these baller planes and fly in famous air battles.

is there anything like this around now? any recs for airplane fighter games?

thanks!!!

There are no new ones.
Of the older ones I recommend European Air War from Microprose.
I flew that a lot and killed many Flying Fortresses and Liberators with my trusty Focke-Wulf.

Is there online combat? Because I'm all fired up to take down your Wermacht ass in my P-51D, Bavarian Frank.

EAW had no online play. You should be thankful for that. Your Mustang would be easy prey for my butcher bird.

I did a lot of online flying in the nineties. I remember a mission where I flew for the japanese ... we were about 30 or 40 Zeros flying escort for dive bombers and there were about the same amount of US Navy planes in the air ... that was cool. I even did some real life air combat with aircombatusa.com .... that was the ultimate challenge.

Oh crap, that's the danger of online bravado - you don't know what you're getting into. Never mind. I'll just give moral support to the Liberator gunners from some undisclosed safe location on the ground.

IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946
http://www.amazon.com/...946-Pc/dp/B000N4JENW

The best WWII air combat simulation ever, hands down. There is still a very active on-line play community on Hyperlobby, although at this point it's somewhat hard to figure out what version of the game be at for on-line play, as the game has been "opened", and there are various people either selling or giving away upgrades.

The creator of Sturmovik has been working a new simulation called Storm of War: Battle of Britain. It's about 2 year late, but when it's finially out it should be amazing!

Read all about it here:

Are you thinking about "Pacific Fighters" by ubisoft? I still have this one. It's not perfect, but it is a lot of fun to take off and land on aircraft carriers and to attack boats in addition to other airplanes.

If these games (and desk top computers) had been around when I was flying in the USAF, we'd have had a hard time getting pilots to plan and fly the real sorties.

Pacific Fighters is a later version of IL-2 Sturmovik. The progression went something like:

IL-2 Sturmovik
IL-2 Sturmovik : Pacfic Fighters
IL-2 Sturmovik : 1946

All are the same game improved with added features over the years.
