Re: 10 mile tt times [Brind-Surch] [In reply to] Can't Post

are you wondering what an average time would be, or what a time would be for someone with pro-tour aspirations?

20mph might be average

25mph with no aero tricks might be indicative of pro level talent =)

20mph would be 30 minutes in a 10 mi TT.

20min is highly highly studly--as in 30 mph studly.

As others mentioned it really all depends what you are asking to be compared to. I would say with decent equipment that 25mph is fair for a 16 year old amateur.

Lots of variables. What size hills? Wind? I can do a TT faster with very slight hills than perfectly flat. But once the hills hit a certain size I am slower.

Re: 10 mile tt times [Brind-Surch] [In reply to] Can't Post

Very hard to say in the abstract.

What is good? Pro level talent? Elite level athlete?Better than average?

What exactly does rolling/flat mean? Just how much it rolls will make a huge difference.

What's the weather like? If the 10 miles is straight into a 20 mph headwind, it's going to slow you down a lot.

Basically, all you can do is ride as hard as you can and see how you stack up against other guys your age.

And don't worry when you don't go 20 minutes. That was a "ST answer." Despite what you'll read on ST, there aren't many riders who can hold 30 mph even for 10 miles (that would be pro level talent) and I'll guess that none of them are 16.

10 miles at 22mph is 27 mins. 10 miles at 23 mph is nearly 26 mins. 10 miles at 25 mph is 24 mins. 10 miles at 30mph is 20 minutes.

"good novices" do 10 miles @ 28mph ? bwahahaha.

Re: 10 mile tt times [dawhead] [In reply to] Can't Post

i'm inclined to agree. in most club TTs a high 19min/low 20 would nab you the overall win.

having said that, anything less than 25 mph would likely land you in the bottom half of the results sheet, hills or no hills.

Yes, record for a 16yr old is 28.9 mph (he came 4th at junior worlds to Mini Phinney that year). Typically there are a handful able to ride 27mph plus. I don't live in USA though - that may make a difference.

In fact some of the kids have gone over 26mph on standard road bikes with restricted gears.

Senior course record is 31mph. 25mph is not that fast for a cyclist.

Restricted gears shouldn't make a difference at 26 mph.

Decent junior 15-16 year olds around here do a very flat 20k (46' total of climbing) in 30 min. So 40 kph. That's about 25 mph.

and he was a "novice", yes? no "novice" bike rider does nearly 29mph for 10 miles. not in venezuela, not in texas, not in the ukraine, not in bali or new zealand. i can believe that a well-trained 16 year old went that fast, although its still quite remarkable.

Re: 10 mile tt times [msuguy512] [In reply to] Can't Post

Are you from Michigan State? I doubt any collegiate rider from Michigan State can ride 10 miles in under 21 minutes. I do a fair bit of training with IU riders and doubt any current or recent past IU riders, including Rahsaan Bahati, could ride 10 miles in under 21 minutes. I have only seen one collegiate rider ride a 20:30 10 miler over almost 20 years of coaching.

Even with aero gear, anything under 23 minutes is fast and under 22 is very fast. Any 16 year old that can ride over 25 MPH (24 minutes or less in a 10 miler) will impress the crap out of me.

If you're not that fast yet, don't worry. You will get a lot faster with years of training.

I am not "from" michigan state, I attended the college though. I recanted my statement to say 22-23minutes which is on par with what the top local juniors here in san diego can do.

At our local 10.2 mile TT (been running for 30+ years straight!), the junior record was just broken by Neil Forbes (age 16, racing age 17). 10.2 miles, rolling (NOT flat) at 22:20 which is 27.4 mph - on junior gears and with NO rear disc.

yeah, I'm down tied for 6th ;)
