2010 American Zofingen REGISTRATION OPEN

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN AT

The 6th Annual American Zofingen Ultra Distance Duathlon will be
May 16, 2010
. After 5 years of dodging leaf peepers, we've decided to move America's ultra distance duathlon classic to the traditional duathlon season, spring. Still too early to swim long distances in open water, this early May date will allow triathletes aiming for a later season iron distance event to put a lot of hay in the barn, and allow duathletes to do the same for the late summer original, Powerman Zofingen in Switzerland. This should fall 3 weeks after Powerman Alabama, 2 weeks after US Duathlon Nationals, April 24/25 in Richmond, VA, and 1 week after our local Trooper Duathlon. This October 11th will be your last chance to race American Zofingen during peak fall foliage on Kona weekend. Enter now, as the (cheap) entry fee goes up on October 1.

You need to move it closer to California so I can road trip. Right now its like 2,400 miles. :) It would still cost less than a plane ticket and flying my bike, but more than I can afford. If it was one week after du nationals I might try it anyway and do a 2-for-1.
Are things pretty quiet there in May? What are the temps like? Was there an issue with the October date or is it just harder to deal with the traffic then?

Mohonk Preserve has been a most gracious host for 5 years now, but they don't need extra visitors during peak fall foliage. I felt bad cramping their style, and a bit worried that congestion at the entrance might block racers returning from the bike course. Also, I really wanted the middle distance to be F1 style, but realized early on that really wasn't practical on that weekend with cars lining up to get in.
As far as California is concerned, Mike Plumb took me for a ride on the course he has in mind years ago. Time for Coach Mike to step up and produce AmZof west coast version! I'll license the name and ICB format to him for a nickle.
May in the Hudson Valley is wonderful. April showers do in fact bring May flowers, but not nearly so much traffic.
As far as being just 1 week after Nats., that's a short recovery after a 2 hour "A" race effort, and we love our Trooper Du on the first Sunday in May and don't want to conflict.

Still going to be a Short Course version? Training for that w/ Harriman a week later would sure provide motivation to get on the trainier in the winter. Plus, that would be a nice 1-2 punch early in the season.

Yes, there will be a SC, MC F1, and the LC, which would wipe out Harryman, but should set one up nicely for Lake Placid.
The SC / Harryman double should make for a nice ST smackdown. Or a LC / Harryman half distance double.

Noooooooo!!!! I totally understand having to move this, but the fall foliage was one of the things that made putting yourself through that much pain for that many hours so worth it.
I look forward to trying out the course when it's green but I'm sad I'll only have gotten to hit it in all it's multicolored splendor once.

That would take a herculean effort! Maybe you can entice Jonas to return as that would be brutal for most mortals. I'm quite sure he's the only one that would be comfy in the frigid waters of Harriman. Afterall, he did say the water was quite balmy at SOS ;)

Very cool, the fall never worked for me coming down from Canada but the early spring date is certainly enticing. I may just have to break my 2010 resolution (already) and train over the winter.

This will be a great move, John. Even better if you can do the F1 version of the middle distance race.
I only did SC and had to zig zag around the cars trying to get into the parking lot of the park at the top of the big climb. There were about 20 Harley riders out there and they kept cutting me off. Once they realized there were cyclists on the road, they were very nice, but many of them didn't even see me.
I'm not sure this is good prep for Lake Placid, though, unless you do short or F1 course. The LC bike is way, way harder than Placid, even though it's a bit shorter.

Andrew, it is with great regret that I've made this decision, but for AmZof to grow, I believe it to be the right move. You can still race it at peak foliage one more time ;-)

You have no idea how badly I wish I could make this year. Unfortunately finances and my unquenchable desire to finally get the state champ jersey in 'cross so it just isn't in the cards. But I'm going to start saving my pennies so I can hit the first annual Spring American Zofingen (SAmZo?)

Jonas was quite serious about the SOS swims being warm. He wants to return to SOS, but next year might have a conflict that weekend with the Rev3 race. I'll leave it up to the geniuses of sadism, such as Murphy's Law and Dev, what would be a good ST smackdown.

You'll definitely need to train all winter if you hope to tackle long course in the spring. If you can finish long course in May, you'll have a huge summer.

shit...it was hard enough to survive harriman in may let alone a much harder race the week before and harriman. Awesome new early season goal. Gonna have to wait and see the course for the first time in a few weeks before I even think about the LC this spring.

Dawn, a big reason for the new spring date is to accomodate an F1 for the middle distance.
Lake Placid is late July; AmZof is early May. I think it's great prep, myself. Go long and hard, then rest and recover and become stronger, fitter.

The final autumn AZ wouldn't be the same without the Albino Gorilla, the ornery primate which first pounded an ICB on the Long Course!
Mohonk Preserve is where the wild things are.

I tried not to conflict with the usual suspects, and slotted in nicely with regards to Powerman Bama, Du Nats. and Trooper. Harryman is a great race, but comes very early for a long tri. That swim is freakin' cold!! I hope we don't draw from them. It's a rare breed that's ready to take on a cold, hilly half iron mid May in NY.

Uhhh just looked and that is mothers day. That could be rough. Mother's day and Easter are traditionally the 2 "no compulsive exercise" allowed days for us. Looks like I have only about 6 months to convince my wife to race ;-)

Damn! That could be a problem. Maybe Saturday would work better. I'm trying to avoid other race's weekends but sure don't want to create Mother's Day conflicts.

This move to May is great news! Maybe now I won't have to ever bug my husband to take a trip to CA to race Wildflower (I always get that "itch"... did it twice, it kicked my ass both times, always hungry for more). I'm not the type to attempt the cold Harriman swim in May, so a spring AZof race is just ideal for a cold water wimp like me! Will ABSOLUTELY put it on my race schedule for next year (I'm doing the fall 09 installment too).
We just bought a house in New Paltz (it'll be a weekend house for now, hopefully will be able to move there full time in the next couple of years)--so I'm super excited about all the races you guys are planning in the area. Hopefully I'll be able to do quite a few.
As for Sat vs Sun--I absolutely LOVE Saturday races (like Tupper Lake)--I just don't get why most tris are on a Sunday... Regardless, count me in (probably for the middle distance one--but we'll see)
