Alcatraz v. Alcatraz

New race director for Escape from Alcatraz so Tri Cal is doing their own Alcatraz race in August. Entry fee is $80 cheaper.

Should be interesting to see how it all plays out, especially if Tri Cal keeps the volunteer system in place. Putting on the race is a lot of work and I'm not sure people would be up for doing it twice in the summer. Plus, IMG has hired Premier Event Management, an out of town group. Anyone know anything about them?

I saw the announcement earlier today and was wondering what would happen too. It will be interesting to see where the participants come from (local/international), pro fields, volunteers, vendors, sponsors, etc. I'm not sure that it will be the best thing to have 2 races that are almost identical. Granted there has historically been Escape from Alcatraz and Escape from the Rock (put on by Envirosports) but I guess we will have to wait and see how things develop with these 2.
I don't even know if I would be willing to participate in the expo twice a year!

PEM puts on a LOT of races. I'm going to say maybe too many. They did NOLA 70.3 last year that had problems. They do NYC tri, and the year I did it it had problems. They did Honolulu tri and last year it was not good.
I did Honolulu tri two years ago when they put it on and it was a good race (slightly short bike course though).
But for both NOLA and Honolulu, it appears they are listening to complaints and making changes for next year. Both websites have "here's what you've said, and here's what we are doing about it"

I've participated in several Tri Cal events, all have been top notch. Not sure we need three Alcatraz events, as much as I enjoy having them in the Bay Area. Question is, will it be good or bad for local race registration?

Are they both the same course? Are there going to be 2 pro races now?
This seems a little strange, but good for the racers - more spread out and lower entry fees.

The courses are a bit different. The TriCal race looks to finish the swim right at the transition area. Not sure how that will work.
The bike is longer. I haven't looked at the course too close, but it's 18 v. 25 miles.
The run looks to be the same.
For both races, the sand ladder may be no more. The Park Service is talking about making some improvements in the Battery area near Baker Beach and in the plans is elimination of the sand ladder.
