I was out there volunteering for the swim, perfect morning with a swift current, they were flying...

Should be a good day also on the bike and run, temps in the low 60's with light winds, maybe 10 knots out of the NE.

3) Will this event have live tracking of athletes for family members to view status on-line?
No. This service is costly and this event will not have this ability in 2009. We are looking into this service for future years and will work to find innovative ways to keep family members at the finish line area updated on as many athletes as possible.

Any idea what he usually swims? Great swim time even with the current! I would brag about a 41 min IronDistance swim. Not sure where the timing mat was located this year, but this race has a very long T1.

I worked this race last year and have raced the Wilmingon YMCA sprint with a 1500 meter swim done with the current. It is fast. Kinda of like swimming on a people mover at the airport. You can probably float the swim and make the cut off time.

Hopefully some bike splits will get posted.

He is usually an extremely strong swimmer. I think the swim might've been a little short. At Austin 70.3, he swam 25 while the top pros swam 23-24 so he can definitely fly. 1500m races i think he's a 20 flat swimmer. He swam in college and US swimming nationals a while back i believe.

BJARNE MOLLER won with a 8:34, with nobody close to him. Second place was around 9:10.

I did the half, it was a great day for a triathlon. The current is unreal, the people doing the full get to swim about 1.5 miles with the current, some people can swim 10-20min faster than normal pretty easy.

Re: Any Beach 2 Battleship updates?? [slammer] [In reply to] Can't Post

I was at 75 miles on the bike course in exactly 3 hours. (Relay.) Bjarne Moller was right in front of me. Passed him at 80 miles and led on the course ... for 2 miles. Then Eric Bean came blowing by. He was a ringer on another relay team. But his runner got chicked my our runner! Julie Seymour out of Greenwood, SC ran a 3:13. Anyway, the winds weren't that much on the bike course, but they were dead on the nose for the final 37 mile run in to the finish and it just seemed brutal at times.

Bjarne was awesome today. It was a long time after he finished before the second place guy came across. Can't recall who that was. I think Peter Kotland was third.

My relay runner from last year, Cameron Dorn, took second overall doing the HIM today ... racing individually.

Gotta give props the David Bridges who swam for our team and was probably in the top 10 out of the water. Under 45 minutes.

Congrats on another relay win and kick butt run by Julie. I really missed B2B this year. Watch out saying he was right in front of you. I was going to work again and Tim was going to race, but we are in the process of moving to TN and Tim is in Germany.

House officially on the market for less than a week an offer MADE. Yes I am happy.

Congrats on the quick offer!

OK ... I wasn't drafting him. He was a speck in the distance that slowly got closer and closer and closer until I finally made my pass at mile 80. He passed me back going over the bridge right there at the finish where I had a twinge of cramp.

We missed your expert officiating. I noted your absence at the mandatory meeting.

Looks like you smoked the ride! Did you run into Shawn at the race? I see he had a 53 min swim.

Re: Any Beach 2 Battleship updates?? [ironmanrex] [In reply to] Can't Post

Very fast course today. Not sure why my name isn't on the preliminary results, but I did the swim in 42:xx, when I'd normally be ~55 (and that was after going straight 100m past the turn because I didn't see the "green blowing man" on the boat. It also seemed a little short. Bike course had favorable winds for the first 2/3rds, but then the wind hit us for the last 37 mi (not too bad, though.) The run was OK except for the 4 passages over the bridges. Great organization, great volunteers, great competitors, perfect conditions (despite a chilly start) and a super fast course. This race is a must do. We did have to wait ~45 minutes for a trolley, but I understand that was a significant improvement since last year.

Re: Any Beach 2 Battleship updates?? [ironmanrex] [In reply to] Can't Post

I saw him twice on the course. I was trapped in Wilmington and was trying to catch the water taxi back to the battleship to see my runner finish. Shawn's wife was with us and the captain said, I can take two of you and not three. (My wife was with me.) Shawn's wife was gracious to let us go and we got to the finish line just at the moment our runner came down the chute. We'd have missed it otherwise. So mucho kudos to Shawn's wife. Last I saw of Shawn he was one mile from the finish. I can only guess he was one of the top 25 or 30 ... if not better.

Just back in after a beautiful day to race. Yes, the current was unreal. I think I swam a 65 when I would have probably swam 80 minutes under more normal conditions. The bike course is quite flat, and the wind really picked up after about 11 am, but that's the only real defense this course has. The run is nice, and the bridge crossings give you more variety in the terrain (in otherwise flat coastal North Carolina).

I ran with my brother and we finished together and had a great time doing it. Living in Wash DC its great to have another choice for a full iron-distance race within a day's drive. Definitely worth checking out, and I would be happy to do it again in a few years.

Bob,

Great job today. Sounds like I missed out on a great race today. I get cold just thinking of last year's race ; ) How was the "new" bike course?
Cam had a GREAT race in the Half. Mad props to him. Whats your offseason look like? We should all get together for a ride.

Hope for a quick recovery!

Not Bob BUT I thought it was pretty cool to get to ride for (I think they said) 14 miles on 140----not often you get to ride on an interstate with a 65mph speed limit!! As for the cold---many folks were out of the water and onto the bike before the "frost warning" was over at 8am!!! Of course it's supposed to be colder tonight (33) so guess it could've been worse..

I dont know if the swim is short but that current was very strong. In the last 13 months I have done a total of 7 hours swim training and swam a 52.

Maybe I just "run warm" but I did the bike with normal bike jersey/base layer combo and arm warmers, and I was comfortable for the entire ride. I did see a lot of riders wearing a LOT more clothing. It always cracks me up when I see a guy on the bike with full disk wheel-aero helmet-aero hydration system wearing so many layers up top he's flapping in the wind like a parachute.

The water temp was a perfect 67 degrees or so and could not have been nicer in a full suit. No, I really don't think the course was short but the current was totally out of hand. I gained about 20 minutes in the swim (61 instead of 80) as you can see I am not a strong swimmer. It might sound odd coming from a non-fish but I think the swim needs to be a bit tougher than that for a full-distance race. Maybe they can ask the tide not to be coming in or out during the race? ;-)
