LeMond Revmaster, hands down. Smooth, solid, most realistic feeling bike. With the Pilot Unit, you get speed/cadence/time/HR. Also can use an elbow pad to ride in the aero position.

If money is no object, the Cyclops w/ built in power meter is the king. Can be set up very close to a road bike.

I am actually considering these and am down to either the Revmaster or the Cycle-ops Sport 100 which is the same as their top of the line minus the computer, flywheel weight, etc. My question is I want something quiet that I can ride without waking up everyone in the house or that I can ride while watching TV and not have to turn it up full blast. I have ridden the belt driven Lemond and they are about silent. Does anyone know how loud the Cycle-ops chain driven bikes are?

I have a non-commercial quality spin bike (got new on my local Craigslist) that I added a regular bike computer onto so I can track time, spped, cadence, etc. I also added some clip on Profile Jammer aero bars to try and replicate the feel of my tri bike. Overall, I'm pretty happy with my set up, which cost me about $250 total.

The only thing that I wish were different is the weighted flywheel. Mine is one heavy solid piece. Some of the commecial ones I've seen at the gym have a little grove where the brake tension thing make contact with the flywheel. This allows the heat generated by the friction to dissipate. On mine, I've noticed slight changes in tension when the flywheel starts warming up. Or maybe it is from my sweat dripping on the flywheel?

I feel the best deal for training is a computrainer. However if you want just an indoor cycle then hands down a Cycleops 300 PT indoor cycle is great. Powertap is included in the rear wheel setup. Just hop on and ride. No need to pump up the tires, calibrate anything really just ride.

I used to use an old tri bike on a trainer at work but bought one of these about a year or more ago. I like it because it's a much cleaner set-up. I got it for 20% off at REI when they were having some sort of members deal. I don't really pay attention to the power stuff though. I just watch my cadence and HR. Also, as far as the TV goes, I've always used headphones/ear buds when riding on a trainer or running on the treadmill. You can buy an extension cord for about six bucks.

I bought my wife a spinning bike a few years back. It's the same model as you might see at the gym - heavy flywheel, commercial grade. After trying it a few times I got hooked. It's adjustable, has great stability for out of the saddle, and allows me to get the heavy resistance I can get with my mag trainer.

About 10 years ago I got a killer deal on a used schwinn spinner. Here is one for 5 bills for example. I actually found mine locally and can't remember now exactly what I paid but that thing is solid and will last forever.

I was about ready to mention the Johnny G bikes. If you can find a health club closing (I know of a couple within about 50 miles of me), you can usually pick up a commercial one as cheap as a walmart special.

Man I'm Slow,

I have ridden the LeMond's and they are silent. How about the Cycleops? Let's say you were on it in the family room and the fam was watching TV. Would they be fine or would they have to really turn it up to hear over the noise?

Have a Lemond revmaster at home....great winter trainer. I also use a Keiser M3 at the gym...which has cadence/wattage/milleage/heartrate/and calories on display. Not as adjustable as the Lemond but I can get it fairly close to my normal Tri setup.

In my experience a chain driven exercise bike can start out reasonably quiet but they will not stay that way.

I got a used Schwinn Johnny G spin bike (the real one) for $20 from my local gym. They got new ones and wanted to be rid of the old. $10 chain and a bit of labor later the thing is good as new - and a much nicer bike than the new ones at the Y.

I like keeping my body "used" to my road bike and tri bike during the off season. My Kurt Kinetic Road Machine has yet to fail me. Relatively quiet, easy to operate and maintain, killer warranty should something go wrong.

Re: Anyone have a recommendation for a home spin bike? [swjohnson] [In reply to] Can't Post

I have the cyclops sport 100. i've abused the crap out of it for 2.5 years and it still works fine. It is quiet but not silent. you can use it and watch TV no problem but not sure about sleep. my wife sleeps thru my workouts (same room) but she can sleep thru anything.
i saw one a while back on the classifieds. i think it was with a power meter but for pick up in TN. The price was very good.

As for the bike, it's good but i'd prefer different bars or the option to use regular bars. the arm pads don't set up that well for a TT position. i ended up mounting a 2x4 with U bolts to the bar and then mounted the arm pads on them. works well.
i also took an old speedometer and positioned it at the crank and calibrated it to give me RPMs.
my 'powermete' is multicolored tape on the tension knob. FTP is between the yellow and green ;).
also, you can not change cranks. they are 170s. It doesn't come with pedals and accepts any std pedal.
be careful if you intend to use it in a forward position. if you are tall or long torso you may run out of legnth for the bars.
Let me know if you have any questions (but i'll be on the road for a few days so can't respond til later)
good luck

I like the Star Trac V Bike-- you can adjust the handle bars and seat to the mm for fore/aft, and the fly wheel is not overly weighted on the outside rim-as in the Johnny G Spinners.... meaning it feels closer to riding on a real bike.

How close to TT position can you get on this bike? Can you use speedplay pedals? I'm tired of trainers! Thanks,
