Bikes and cars: Can we share the road?
Can't Post
Hello All,
LA Times devoted a goodly amount of space to bicycling in today's health supplement:

Excerpt:
Avoid escalation:
Never antagonize motorists, even if they act aggressively. Escalation only increases your risk of injury. When it's you versus 4,000 pounds of steel, the odds are against you, no matter how right you are. "Keep your finger where it belongs: on your handlebars," Mionske writes in "Bicycling and the Law." "If you absolutely must use your finger, use it to dial the police."
and:
It could have been a tragedy last November when Pedro Carrasco tumbled 150 feet off a dirt trail and down a remote 8,000-foot mountain during Costa Rica's La Ruta de los Conquistadores, a four-day, Pacific-to-Atlantic trek known as one of the world's toughest mountain-bike races. He was out of sight, freezing, had a broken hip and couldn't cry for help because of a broken jaw. But Carrasco lay within reach of his handlebars, upon which he'd installed a horn to scare cows, pumas and monkeys out of his way. About midnight, after seven hours in and out of consciousness, he was located by a rescue team that heard his desperate honking in the black, moonless night.

Hello Nealhe,
Yes, we can share the road but what it will take and is a program of education for both drivers and cyclists. Cyclists are more likely to know what their rights and responsibilities are when riding on the road with motorists, motorists is less likely. Although, I was pleased to see no less than 5 questions on my recent BC knowledge test for the driving licence were on action and entitlements of cyclists on the road.
Drivers need to be more aware of how they should interact with cylcists and how cyclists will act whilst riding on the road. We, as cyclists should be aware and adhere to the laws governing our actions on the road.
