He has lost pretty much all "street-cred" when he sold out to big publishing.
Good for him to be finally able to make a living with his writing, but when reading his work you got to keep in mind where his pay comes from.

What Guru have managed to accomplish though is: 1) adapt the format to bicycle marketing; and
2) completely strip it of interesting people and entertaining conversations.
This is quite daring.
I quit reading him a long time ago, but this was pretty funny!

I'm pretty sure he isn't making much for "selling out" to big publishing. As a matter of fact the rag that carries his tiny column gains more in perceived street cred from Joe Bike than he gains in the wallet I'm guessing. He's not bank rolling a new Porsche thanks to Bicycling mag.
His blog is awesome because it basically pokes fun at sacred cows which is healthy and adds needed realistic perspective. He doesn't need to be some starving urchin to make a solid point and lay out sarcasm. I love cycling, bikes etc and I've been riding my entire life (bmx, mtb, tri, road, whatever), but I'll be the first to admit, the industry and many of it's "experts" are full of shit or wrong so often that it becomes funny after a while. I'm an aerospace engineer (yeah big deal right) and at times the "tech" is almost enough to make me laugh right into a seizure. Some good technology/development happens, but it comes with gallons and gallons of snake oil.
And seriously, those Guru ads are the most pompous drivel I've seen in a while. Light 'em up becase they have it coming.....

Seriously, the video is pretty goddamn hilarious.
I mean besides all the random ass claims made by Guru (we were the first one to think about horizontal wind flow...derr, just cause Guru didn't notice other companies doing this doesn't mean it wasn't happening) it was perhaps the worst marketing I've ever seen for a bike product.
No data, very little actual explanation, no excitement, not even half naked people.

Maybe you could ask to have the "Seal of Disapproval" as part of the livery. Or colourway if you're so inclined.
Or put a lunchbox on one and leave around town to measure whether it is cool and post it on the felt blog (assuming good result)

That is funny you mentioned adding his touch to our bikes. I did ask for permission to use his seal on our bikes. I've had some dialogue back and forth with him and recently answered a number of questions about me, my job duties, and Felt. I anticipate some of our discussion hitting his blog tomorrow. I'm eager (and a little worried) to see how it will read.

I finally watched "almost" one of these videos completely but had to walk away after a few minutes. The ad agency who came up with the idea to do this around a dinner table is as much to blame as the guys at Guru for accepting the concept. Stuffing their faces while talking about the "unique" frame design is just not good, nor attractive. Sitting in a coffee shop and drawing on napkins while maybe drinking some coffee, is actually more realistic and makes more sense, but even that is still kind of silly.
Oh well, what do I know.

They should have filmed the pizza lunch they gave me when I went for my fitting at the factory.
Filming some regular schmuck like me getting a free lunch in their beautiful showroom factory would have had much more impact on the regular joe bike buyer.
All the same people were at the table and we talked about fitting riding in with kids and work. Now that is something most age groupers can relate to.

Isn't Guru a Canadian company? They pronounce things differently up there (some words). No offense to Canadians, I think they're awesome people. Example: a-boot = about, semee = semi, centr-all = central (got that one from Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts watching the Maple Leafs in action each week).

Just keep in mind that most of the Guru people are French-Canadian and English is their second language.
Actually, I would like to hear you talk aero techno jargon stuff in French :) I'd probably post snide comments about it on an Internet forum afterward. That video is awful, granted - but I'm glad to see they did not let the "English as a second language" thing stop them from sticking their necks out.

That Guru ad is horrific. In all honesty they have just destroyed any cred they had with me. I was really fond of the brand, never owned one, but I liked the brand. This makes them look like complete twats.
wow, they need to fire the marketing team behind this.

If, every time the forum was loaded, a little screen popped up with this on it, the forums, nay, the world, would be a better place.
But then there would be about 1/10th as many threads, so, then again...

That's a nice piece, good to see you're brave enough to risk being satirised.
Though suggesting that Specialized is an option, really?!? ;)

I thought that might get me into a little trouble, but pretending that Specialzied or just about anyone making $5000+ road bikes are inferior altogether is altogether transparent to everyone. They make great bikes. Felt makes great bikes, we share many of the same components and component vendors. They have some innovations and products we don't (cranksets, eyewear, helmets, etc...) and we offer things they don't. As I mentioned, it is a great time to be a consumer of high end bicycles. You can literally have any alll all options out there if you are willing to consider multiple brands.
