Buffalo, NY
Can't Post
So I have an option to move out to Buffalo, NY after I graduate from College (next spring). One of my friends will be living out there and asked me to possibly join him. My ultimate goal after college is to see how far I can make it as a triathlete, so I figure I can work at a running or biking store in the area for income (or substitute teach a couple times a week I am an Elementary Education Major)
My question is what is the training scene like out there? Weather? Pools? Good places to bike and run? Any info on the area would be helpful.
I know its a long time away, but I figured I could start kinda planning post college now.

Friend of mine moved out there and now runs an ED....Snow Snow Snow Snow Snow. I know quite a few Tri folks there now and they have a pretty fun and active club...they are not ST folks however. Would be more than happy to hook you up with folks out there - plus a friend Kara owns a spa with message folks on site (in Hamburg).

I grew up in upstate NY and summers there are beautiful - both days. Seriously, its not uncommon to still have significant snow on the ground in May. June to Sept is really really nice, then from October snow is possible, by November snow is definite and the winter months made living in Boston and New York City seem like the Bahamas. Alot good to say about my homeland - good outdoors options for hiking, mtn biking (also especially good if you like to ski), best fried fish in the world, etc - but probably not the place for an aspiring triathlete looking to train year round. That said, Musselman HIM in Geneva (1/2 hr from Buffalo) is one of the best I have done - great organization, great course, etc. Let me know if you need more info.

Hi,
I live in the buffalo area. The tri scene is actually very good around here, it has been getting better and better over the last couple years. There is very good cycling outside of the city, especially south.
Buffalo is right across from Ontario Canada and Ontario is a HUGE hot bed for competitive triathletes and great races.
The buffalo triathlon club is growing and growing and there are workouts a few days of the week, which include swims, bricks and much more.
We have a lot of great races, even an xterra.
www.m2xtreme.com
Buffalo does get a bum rap for having a lot of snow but it really isn’t that bad. November through the end of March there will be on and off snow but it’s not all snow as many people think.
Buffalo has an NFL and an NHL team and the cost of living is cheap except for the blasted NY taxes.
Go to
www.buffalotriathlonclub.com
for more info on the buffalo tri scene. There are links to races and more information.
Enjoy.

If that is your goal, I wouldn't put Buffalo at the top of your list. About four years ago I moved back to Western New York after 15 years in the mountain and pacific time zones. Although the weather wasn't as bad as I remembered as a kid, if I had a choice I'd head back west in a millisecond.

We had 3.5 inches of snow this year and it was all between 8pm and 10pm on one night and it was 100% gone by noon the next day.
I got real sick of shoveling snow and unburying my car everyday in Buffalo.

I actually like the season changes in WNY. I love skiing, snow boarding and snow shoeing so I guess that helps. I'm not going to lie tho I do get sick of snow some times but season changes are a beautiful thing.

Im out in Rochester for college now. At least in Rochester I have found a lot more road cyclists, and runners, than triathletes. The weather in the winters not all that bad. Just might want to invest in a CX bike.

The weather is terrible for training.

My thoughts from visiting Buffalo during the winter, I stay on Grand Island which is great for riding/running and I often see some BTC members there. I know the indoor pool scene is good in Tonawanda but the locals can go into detail. I know you will need good running gear for the wind and cold, not sure how much road riding outdoors, most will probably be on a trainer and maybe mtn biking? I am sure the winter is not much different than Vermont, Green Bay or anything else up there. I know I ran with a windchill in the single digits, with windpants over good tights and thought, for the 4 mile run I am doing, a treadmill would be nice. You will find your threshold for the elements

I live 60 miles down the road and pretty much concur with the other comments. Not impossible to make it work, but you will certainly be making compromises on your training relative to people who live and train in environments where they can cycle outdoors on dry roads year round. What are your other options?

I semi-lived in Tonawanda (just outside of Buffalo) for a year while my then-fiance now-wife was in grad school. First, let me make it clear that Buffalo is NOT the perfect place for tri training from late October through early April. If the primary thing you are looking for in a place to live is the ability to get in 12 months a year of quality training, you can do better than Buffalo.
That said, Buffalo is not as bad as I thought it would be. The suburbs where I spent my time had lots of nice roads to run and ride with wide shoulders (presumably for snow removal) and the roads were cleared within hours of a snowfall (which occurred pretty much every day in the winter). You can run outdoors pretty much every day of the year, but quality running in the winter can be tough unless you find yourself an indoor track. A cross bike would definitely be a good investment too. There are plenty of places to swim. Summer (late June-August) is beautiful. Another thing to keep in mind is that the climate is very different depending on exactly where you live in relation to the lake. In Tonawanda, we would often have days where we got 2 inches of snow while, 30 miles to the southwest, they would get a foot. Definitely something to consider if you move there. Good luck wherever you go.

Thanks for all the responses. Yeah I have been tossin up the ideas to move to Boulder, Co or Austin, TX and my friend who moved out to Buffalo just tossed the idea of livin' with him to me the other day, so I figured I would check it out. I live in St. Cloud, MN right now so I can deal with the cold, but we usually don't get tons of snow. At least not as much as it seems to get out there, not even close. I still have time to figure stuff out which is nice.

I was living in the Town of Lewiston at the time, working in Niagara Falls. I was stuck at work from Thursday morning until I went home "illegally" on Sunday afternoon. The storm was so bad it was illegal to be outside starting on Friday and ending on Monday. On Thursday of the following week I drove from Lewiston to my Mom and Dads house in North Tonawanda, where I was born and raised, and got LOST. All you could see from your car was mountains of snow so high you couldn't see any businesses or homes as you drove down a valley of snow. It was bizzare as hell!!!!!!
Hyde Park Blvd in Niagara Falls saw so much snow that a tractor trailer jackknifed in the middle of the road and was burried so deep in snow, that it became a "hill" for cars to drive over : )
That was enough.......I moved to Virginia in April.

Technically Buffalo is Western NY. I can't speak to Upstate NY, but I'm in Rochester about 60-70 miles east of Buffalo and although we get substantially less snow (truly, it's a great deal less), there's no way in hell it's common to have snow on the ground in May, or even April. The winter is not terrible here and the summers, although not scorching, feel quite long in length. You can get out for plenty of outdoor riding in April and basically you're looking at 7-8 months of nice weather for running/cycling outdoors (might see sprinkles of snow in Oct but nothing will stay on the ground for any amount of real time until Dec). I've spent limited time in Buffalo, but in Rochester the area is very well suited to cycling. There is an active community here, too, for clubs.
After school, though, I'd get a real job, not become a tri-bum working at a bike store.

Definintely agree that the weather, particularly the winter weather, in Rochester is ALOT better than Syracuse or Buffalo. I lived in Rochester for a bit and I'd say all around its the best upstate city for many of the reasons cited. That said, if you are not from the area I think winters in Buffalo and/or Syracuse can be a shock to newcomers. If you want more info, just google "lake effect snow." Me, I started working a real job immedaitely after school. If you have the option and you love the sport, do the tri-bum thing, you got the rest of your life to work!

And if in doubt look at average snowfall levels for buffalo/rochester/syracuse. I think rochester is just over 100. Buffalo is probably in the ballpark of twice that. They always get smashed. Snow coming off Lake Erie nails Buffalo as it moves North East, then it continues east and in great part skips Rochester, then smashes the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, giving that area there truly stunning snowfall.
Personally I wish we got more snow here. Two winters ago I only used my snow blower a few times, though last winter I used it probably a dozen.
