I lived in Buffalo and now Rochester. One pro of Buffalo is that you can get some good wings. Also like others have said the summers are great for training. The winters are not that bad. Although a lot of snow does fall it does not stick around all winter. I ran all winter this year and there were only a few days that I running on the snow was really that bad. Just get some warm running gear and you will be fine. As far as the bike, stick with the trainer in the winter or take some spin classes.

Definintely agree that the weather, particularly the winter weather, in Rochester is ALOT better than Syracuse or Buffalo. I lived in Rochester for a bit and I'd say all around its the best upstate city for many of the reasons cited. That said, if you are not from the area I think winters in Buffalo and/or Syracuse can be a shock to newcomers. If you want more info, just google "lake effect snow." Me, I started working a real job immedaitely after school. If you have the option and you love the sport, do the tri-bum thing, you got the rest of your life to work!
And if in doubt look at average snowfall levels for buffalo/rochester/syracuse. I think rochester is just over 100. Buffalo is probably in the ballpark of twice that. They always get smashed. Snow coming off Lake Erie nails Buffalo as it moves North East, then it continues east and in great part skips Rochester, then smashes the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, giving that area there truly stunning snowfall.

Personally I wish we got more snow here. Two winters ago I only used my snow blower a few times, though last winter I used it probably a dozen.

Buffalo averages around 100" of snow a year. The area south of Buffalo gets hit pretty hard, but that's not the city itself.

Buffalo is right across from Ontario Canada and Ontario is a HUGE hot bed for competitive triathletes and great races.

For sometime I have heard it said that, that is the best thing about being a triathlete in Buffalo - you have Ontario right there. Not a bad option as the list of really great triathletes that have come out of Ontario is pretty impressive Whitfield, Reid, Bentley, Bowden, etc . .
- that's two Olympic Medals and countless IM wins right there! :)
