Dave Z's TT position. Has it changed?
Can't Post
I am not sure because the difference is rather small, but seems to me that he is riding in team Garmin with his head a bit higher than when he was in team CSC.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Maybe it's the helmet? The old Bell aero lids with the ridiculously long tail had, IIRC, a much thinner layer of foam in them than the Giro Dave now wears. Perhaps that accounts for some of it?
Additionally, he fractured a vertebrae in 2008 at the Giro. Perhaps he had to change his position as a result of that.
Do you have any good pictures?

His hands are obvious but his hips look lower also?

Helmet tail on the back is not so critical. The sandwich hands and lower head help get that "Levi" bullet leading edge so there is no seperation between the hands/arms and the head.
DZ did not spend time in the tunnel until he started with Felt/Garmin. "Fasionable" items like straight extensions have been replaced with a proven faster position.
Wait 'til you see the other changes that will be adopted by several others in '10.

Regarding straight extensions - are they bad for all or some? Why the move to them - surely not fassion alone? Is it the extension or the position they make your hands be in that is the problem? Can you move your hands to a better position whilst being on straight extensions/.
One reason I ask is there are not many options these days, almost everything is straight on new bikes so most people have straight extensions.....do they go out and replace their aero-bars???

I recently spoke to a local fitter here in SLC who has helped Dave with his positon. He mentioned tha with the way the Felt is set up head tube wise, Dave was not able to get as low as on his Cervelo. Just something I remember him saying.

He looks just as low (if that is the most important thing) to me on the Felt verses the Cervelo, actually I think he looks better on the the Felt. If you look at how he killed the competition at the USA TT championship, I would say that this Felt worked better for him then the Cerverlo did in the past.

From the pictures I have seen, he has been playing with different elbow and hand positions.
Probably part of this is that the 3t bars are more adjustable. The Vision bars that he rode at CSC were the fixed variety where you cannot change much.
I believe Zabriske to be very adaptable and have a natural sense for a fast position (he can drop into something extreme and still produce great power). I liken this to a swimmer that has great feel for the water. They can just feel what is right.

I recall reading something somewhere that both Zabriske and Millar tested better in the tunnel with their heads down and the tails of the helmets up than with their heads statically level. Hence the videos of the two of the in TT's with their heads down/up/down/up/down - with the up part being a peek I would assume to see where they are going!!

Dave has a custom stem that allows his base bars to be set up well below the centerline of his top tube. There is no limitaton to his Felt vs. the fixed drop of the FSA/Vision integrated bar/stem used previously on his CSC bike.

Dave, Do you have a picture showing this? The pads look a bit higher in relation to the seat on the Felt vs his CSC TT bike. Hard to tell without a tape but in the last pictures I saw of him in the November issue of Velonews I got that impression.
It is also apparent as someone else said that he has been making changes here and there in his position since he started riding for Garmin.
Thanks,
Sergio

that is true about Dave, in the TTT frequent visual checks are needed, in the ITTs the team car tells him where to go in his earpiece so he doens't have to look where he's going and he can maintain that posture longer.

Oh yeah, Remember those mirrors that were made to attach to your (round) TT, that faced forward, that way you never had to look up! come on, you're old, you have to remember those.
How long before an aero video screen and camera show up for this purpose...

The video screen will never make the UCI events and I wonder how long until the UCI outlaws the "looking-down-while-the-car-guides-you" practice.
