Desiree and Ryan up close...NYC pictures
Can't Post
Cheered on some STers and friends at mile 23 of the NYC marathon this morning, and thought I'd share a few pictures:
The beautiful Desiree Ficker to get your attention. I met her at a 10k where she was the female champion, and I was lucky enough to be the male winner. Nicest person you could ever meet, but has a take no prisoners attitude that was fun to see. Fellow celiac too!
Next is Ryan Hall. He is such a smooth runner; however, his gait looks almost inhuman. It's almost as if he is a praying mantis as he unfurls his long legs with each stride:
The next picture is the most meaningful to me. James Kwambai, the third fastest marathoner of all time, stopped in front of me and my friends. As one of the best athletes in the world, he had trained for months with this in mind, and to witness his dejection while walking slowly down Fifth Avenue was heart wrenching. I walked beside him and gave my water. He mumbled a thank you, and his complete mental capitulation nearly brought me to tears. I gave him a pat on the back and a kind word before leaving him to continue the lonely walk up the road. He looked as if he just wanted to hide, to escape whatever personal anguish or shame he was feeling.
I wish I could have hugged him; I wish I could have said everything will be alright. But I knew, on this day, that would be a lie. Ryan Hall's fight, or Meb's acceleration for the win will be the lasting image of the race. For me though, James Kwambai's struggles showed more about the human spirit. He layed himself on the line and failed. However, he will overcome, and when he wins his next race I will smile and know that everything actually was alright, even if it wasn't for a few hours on November 1st.
More pictures on my blog and facebook. Friend me (all STers are friends!). Hope the Halloween weekend was amazing!

Use a faster shutter speed and up your ISO settings. Cause, that's like a photo equivalent of "your seat is too high."

Thanks for the advice. Sadly, I do not consider myself a photographer, nor do I play one on the weekends. I was using one of those cheap cameras from Wal-Mart that take 2 seconds to click. So with each shot I had to lead the subject like I was a quarterback. And they are very, very fast receivers :)

Thanks Zooma. I always feel like I'm putting myself out there a little bit when I post sentimentality rather than jokes. So a comment like yours is great to hear.

Probably should have said I'm listed as David Roche! I go to school at Columbia University (if you want to use the advanced search). If not, my profile pic is currently my Halloween costume----Tour de Franzia. Franzia box, bike shorts, tastefully placed dispenser that said "Squeeze for Treat". Classy, I know :)
Thanks Megan! Those pictures xcool took at the finish are beautiful!

It's always amazing to me to see a superhuman athlete(Kwambai) when they lose it. Kind of reminds us that no matter how great they are there is a reason they run the race and don't hand out the awards b/c of what you have done. Anything can happen on race day. Ryan Hall's gait is unreal I agree. I'm fairly certain I could hang with him on my MTB, but not 100%;)

Thanks! I always feel pressure trying to do these athletes justice. I was thinking of photoshopping Desiree's picture to make her prettier, but that is pretty much impossible :)

Sounds like you got a little crush on her.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Here are a few from Mile 26. I have stacks more, but these seem to be some ST favorites.

A run-biathlon is just like a draft-legal tri. It devalues shooting because all you have to do is stay close on the first run, then gun down the leaders :)
That sounds crazy though. I would not trust myself with a firearm during a race, because I might be tempted to put myself out of my misery. Thanks!

With all th recent updates in aerodynamic clothing/ equipment (swimming/ cycling/ triathlon) why do the top runners like Ryan continue to wear the decades old baggy shirt and shorts. Desiree has it down for the women. Have there ever been any tests on running apparrel and aerodynamics. I say the same thing watching sprinters, particularly the women, with big hairdos.....they're fast but couldn't they be a wee bit faster?

It depends how close you can get the ladder to her window.
Just kidding, of course. The ladies really only enjoy it when you send locks of your hair (the shaven leg variety). To be serious, she is an incredible athlete outside of aesthetics, and I have immense respect for her.
