Do you lose speed in the "off-season" ? (running related)

So saturday morning I head out for my long run and head into the valley where they are setting up for the cross country running national championships, and find out there will be a fun 5km race on the trails after the mens and womens races. So I decide to run in that. So I cut my run short by about 20 mins and figure I will just run it a threshold pace. So race time comes around and I run the course in 23 mins. This pace was comfortable but slower than I thought, and I dont think I could have found my race pace.... Cole's notes: So my question is when the season is over and you stop doing threshold intervals or speed work and just do base/aerobic stuff every run, do you lose these other gears until you start that type of training again ? or does this feed into the possible overtraining I think I did in july/august? thanks for the reply's.... ____________________________________________________ LSD Running FTW!!!
