Fitness testing
Can't Post
This being the off season I have a question that I would like your (slowtwitch) opinions on. I am working on fitness testing for a police department. Every officer must take the test. At this time it consist of
sit and reach
push-ups
sit-ups
body fat using skin calipers
1.5 mile run
They get scored on a scale and the young guys try for 100%
Everyone wants to reach the minimum
All positive rewards: comp time for workouts , training gear etc.
Remember this needs to be given to all officers so time is a factor.
Do any of you have a test that police, fire, etc. take
Age groups 5 year or 10 year ? No age groups ?
Test you think should be given ?
Scoring ?
I was thinking 6:00-6:30 mile pace = 100%
6:31-7:00 mile pace = 90%
7:01-7:30 = 85%
7:31-8:00 = 80%
Thanks for any help.
I am not payed for this so I am not asking for you to do the work and then I get paid for it : )
I will share the final details with all law Enforcement on our web site

In Ontario they use a PREP test for hiring. You can search that, but they also use a PIN test which has the same criteria as you are suggesting (minus the fat calipers). Here is an older link describing it, with the age graded tables and standards needed to get 100%. The run paces you are suggesting seem faster than what they have, but I didn't work it out for sure.

Yeah - just go by the military stds. They are about right. I think the Air Force and Navy runs are about that long. Army and Marine Corp have longer runs. These are for basic recruits as well and age graded. Specialty schools use far different parameters.

dang ... not me!
I think max push ups/sit up for 18-21 year old when I was in 82/92 for 100 pts each with 10:54 max time for the run. I did a 300, but those are impressive (even by my Ranger stds) ;)

There's a reason or two my elbows don't function well now...but I keep hoping the old speed will come back a bit. I haven't yet cranked out a mile or two, but soon will just to see.

Since they might be using this test to get rid of police officers as they age I do not think you should be doing it. Why do they have them taking a test now ? should there not have been a mininum requirement in place before.

Dennis, what is the goal?
I assume there is some 'ideal' that you would like the test to measure. Is it health, or is it ability to apprehend bad guys?
For the apprehension goal, bodyfat wouldn't be a factor and neither would age. Criminals don't resist less if the cop's in a higher age group!

We just hired a 61 year old so no it's not to get rid of older people. I guess the idea is to motivate and encourage the staff to workout and stay healthy. They offer lectures, personal fitness plans, built a nice gym. Like I said before only positive reenforcement. Someone asked didn't we do this before people were hired. The answer is people tend to slowly get out of shape. A good wellness program offers many things. At this time no one is required to take the test BUT everyone does including dispatch etc. They want the comp time for working out, the clothing or other incentives. It seems to be a very proud department. I do not need the "seal" "Bruce Lee" fitness test. I just want to develop a fair well rounded test.

OK, that makes sense. I'll think of it as a corporate wellness program.
One thing that can help is to score things with an age handicap which you already mentioned.
In regard to running, you can consider using this to age and weight grade the running:

Why aren't police officers held accountable for fitness (real fitness)...I could never understand why not.
On the other hand, many soldiers aren't either...

It just occurred to me that it might be better to use waist to hip (or waist to chest) ratio rather thank bodyfat caliper testing for that component of the test.
Calipers are notoriously inaccurate and we've recently seen the medical community moving away from weight or BF% to the measurement ratio as a better predictor of cardiovascular health.

THEN, you should do a series of exercises.
Step 1: Establish a base line for
each
person
Step 2: prescribe a fitness program based on base results and individual needs.
Step 3: Test periodically [6-8 weeks] and evaluate against individual baseline...ie. % improvement.
As you know everyones talents lie in different areas so to assign a score based on how person 1 compares to person 2 would be counterproductive and leave many feeling dejected. this would defeat what you are setting out to do
A good range of exercises are those which test strength, cardio fitness and core conditioning and would include:
Pushups
Situps
Burpees
Bench squats
2K run
Do these as a 1 minute maximal test [except the 2k which is obviously absolute].
Hope this is useful...
Cheers...
