Great Lake Escape CANCELLED	Can't Post

Just received this email:

Great Lake Escape Triathlon Canceled

Rising fuel prices for water transportation, water support and for
other transportation support have unfortunately led to the
cancellation of the 2008 Great Lake Escape scheduled for September 7.
We will be looking to possibly bring back the event in 2009. All
registered participants will receive a 100% refund of their entry
fees. These checks will be mailed starting August 11.

Instead of canceling the race they should do what the airlines are now doing, make EVERYTHING a la carte.

Swim caps $3.

Gatorade $4 and up, depending on how badly you want it.

"Protection" for your bike when you're swimming and running, $15.....

I saw that on their website just the other day. I have done this race in the past and it was a great time.

I was curious as to why they would cancel the race instead of just starting the swim at the beach and doing an out and back. It is a great venue and running on the beach is really a challenge.

There has to be more to this story... is the race organization in financial trouble? It would seem a lot of their costs are already sunk costs so it seems dubious that "fuel costs" are he culprit.

When you get a "fuel cost" from police, ambulance, fire, boats and on and on - things add up VERY fast.

If the race was in financial trouble - no one would get a refund....what is your theory? Sure fuel costs may be a vail - but it could be the straw that broke the camels back. Maybe the RD does not want the trouble of putting on a race? Nothing wrong with that either. People are getting their money back - what is the harm in canceling?

you might want to point out that this race has a very small turnout, and the start is from one of those giant ferry type boats......then you can see how "Rising fuel prices for water transportation" come in to play. can't be cheap to run that boat. plus as i recall i'm pretty sure they load everyone on buses etc to get to the ferry dock

That seems to make sense just seems weird to cancel it that's all. I am hopeful for a healthy Fat Rabbit for more racing in 2009!

no harm no foul here guys. they are giving the money back to anyone who entered and paid. it just doesn't seem like a big deal to me that they are not holding the race.

USAT Mideast site says it was cancelled because RD lost sanctioning.

That is a fairly serious allegation; in checking over the USAT Mideast site (and using the SEARCH feature on the site) I can find no reference at all to this event. Not asking for a photo (you know, if no photo, it did not happen), but can you cite exactly where it was you saw this info?

I'd question the accuracy of this:

2008 Duathlon Schedule, Rules and Scoring

Download the 2008 Duathlon Series Schedule - REVISED & UPDATED. Several races fell
off of sanctioning, so we lost four races and picked up one race. All the races affected are
in Kentucky.

Races DELETED
Schellers Sprint Duathlon
Great Lakes Escape Duathlon
Atex Challenge Duathlon
KHF Championship Duathlon

For openers: "All the races affected are in Kentucky."
Last time I checked, GLE was held up on Lake Erie - a good distance from Kentucky. I'll agree the race has been deleted, but not for the reason you maintain....

To all,

I posted that message on the Mideast Region site. I will re-word that to keep everyone from Slowbitching :)

I deleted/cancelled many races due to not being on any race schedule. on TriFind website or USAT race website.

Not meant to throw daggers at any RD especially Fat Rabbit or Headfirst, for which these races I cancelled off
our regions Du Series. I respect both these RD's and others as well. Never meant to be a stab at the RD.
You can call it what you want.

If the RD's did not put in their hard efforts into the sport..........you would not have a sport folks.

Drop the serious allegations comment, means nothing but to those who throw the word out.
Find something else to do with you time and try put something back into the sport to make it great for
everyone.
