Hello! My new build! Can't Post

Hi all!

I just got done putting together a tri bike I built for my girlfriend. It's a 2007 Cervelo P2-SL that I assembled for quite cheap. Hope she likes it! This is a decent bike, no? A bit heavy at 19lbs...but it's a budget build. Total cost $760 + whatever I pay for bar tape tomorrow.

Nice, subtle ride for the price. The gesture alone should get you some action.

Nothing fancy! But it'll be a improvement for her...she did her last HIM on a hybrid. This is a decent frame though, right? After having bought everything and put it together, I'm starting to wonder if I should have paid a bit more for a different frame...like a Trek Equinox 7 frame or a Blue T17 frame or a few others that were relatively cheap on CL and eBay. Ah well...what's done is done! I was partial to Cervelo because I really like my P2C...

See if you can cut down the length of the shifter cables once she is fitted on the bike. They look to be the standard stock length and could be cut a fair bit shorter and down closer to the basebar.

As for the no wow factor, do not worry about that as what you paid for this build is pretty WOW.

Good work.

For $760 you should be given an award.

And, she'll be over-biked for a long time. Until she starts beating you...No need to worry about getting a "good-enough" bike.

Just let her pick the handlebar wrap tape color.

Nice build for the price. You should at least get some fellatio out of it.

Good work.
The cable lengths, I left a bit long because I anticipate needing a much longer stem. The frame came with the stem the previous owner used...and it's like 10mm or some crazy short non-sense. I anticipate needing a 90mm-110mm. So hopefully the cable length works out...if not, I'll adjust it! I have a Vision 90mm stem...if my gf needs something longer, I'll have to buy one...which would bum me out because the miser in me loves the current total cost. lol

I have a longer one... Just kidding. Nice ride and I hope you get some serious point banked for that build. Good job.
P.S. Get her in the big chain ring soon.

Re: Hello! My new build! [teamtrinity] [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't mean to be too nosy, and feel free to ignore me, but I'm trying to get good at the whole "custom built bike on a budget" thing, and $760 seems unbelievable for this bike.

Do you have a rough brake-down of what you paid for/where you got some of the components on this machine?

Coincidentally, I'm helping a girl buy or build her first tri-bike, and earlier this week I showed her pics of the same P2-SL frame. I was pumped about its generally awesome reputation for aerodynamacy. She just went "eww, look at that color." I was grumpy for the rest of the day.

Very nice bike, your gf will be thrilled. Plus, it's always nice to give a gift you've made with your own hands. I love the anodized gray frame--I own a Soloist Team with that exact color (or exact lack of color) scheme. I just finished a budget P3C build, it was a great learning experience. Kept every thing very low$ until the end and then splurged on a power meter.

Re: Hello! My new build! [red_and_black] [In reply to] Can't Post

Your post cracked me up. Several years ago I was going to get my wife a used Volvo to replace our aging Ford Explorer. It was a really, really nice car--300hp, 4 wheel drive, black exterior with a very nice tan/orange leather interior, only 20k miles--I was drooling over it. She took one look at it and said "a black car, you're joking right?"

What are you going to do?

I bought most of the bike off of eBay from a girl on Ohio. I won the auction...and she offered to take a bit off the top if I was willing to come pick it up. I'm in Michigan. So I did...2 hour drive but my car gets very good mileage, so just slashing the shipping cost was worth it for me...but she took some money off the bid price as well. So for $700, I got almost the entire bike...everything except wheels. I swapped out the slightly beat up Profile Designs saddle for Selle Italia saddle with Cervelo branding on it that I had in the closet, never been used. I picked up pristine Dura-Ace derailleurs from a fellow local triathlete for $60 and put those on it. I'll be using the Ultegra's I took off the bike for a roadbike build for the GF this spring. I put my old training wheelset on the P2-SL...which is fine since I have two other wheelsets for my tri bike. I put on some Speedplay pedals that I had in the closet (hopefully she's ok with Speedplay!). And voila! I just need bartape...change out the stem...and maybe cut down the fork if she wants to get lower.

Most if it was just finding a really great deal. And having a spare wheelset. The other parts swap out weren't necessary at all...but I did it anyway. The bike is very very close to new condition. A couple very tiny nicks that are barely noticeable! And some scratches on the crankarms, to be expected. Though, I'm half thinking about putting on a crankset I have in the closet that's in 'new' condition. Or I might save that for the roadbike build. Decisions, decisions.

Good luck on building up a bike for your gf!

I'm in that same exact market looking for exactly that frameset. Just need it in a 48cm and have some nice 650's to slap on there. Might I inquire where such a frame could be had for cheap?

Great Frame...Great Build...You done well. I have owned 3 different P2 Aluminums over the years and I'm currently on a P3SL. I love the P2 alums. Great Frame and indestructable with the anodized paint.

Uh-oh.

You got her an aluminum P2, when you have a carbon one? You might be in trouble.

Great build!!! At $760 to build, you probably saved at least the equal amount, maybe more, versus a "buy new" of similar quality. That's gotta say something to the margins on bikes.

WELL DONE!

I need to work on the Ebay thing.

Maybe I'll practice by buying a bunch of really cheap crap, and then selling it back.
