IMFL water temp
Can't Post
Could not find an answer to my satisfaction via search so here goes.
I had merrily assumed the water temp at IMFL was always fairly chilly - after reading the little article in the most recent triathlete I am pondering if I would be wise to purchase a swim skin, or if my wetsuit is assured. If it is always cool enough, is it magic thermometer legal, or legal legal?

I did a race this weekend on Tyndall AFB and the water was 82 according to Mr Surfs, well it felt alot warmer than that. But I do believe there is a magic thermometer that will allow you to use a wetsuit, it comes out every year for Gulf Coast Triathlon and the Ironman. Last year I was surfing 2 days before the race in shorts, and race day was wetsuit legal.

There have been 2-3 times when Gulf Coast was not wetsuit legal. Considering the baking and roasting of competitors you get once they hit land, preventing overheating can be a bigger safety issue than flotation if the race ends up a calm and hot day.
IMFL typically ends up somewhere legitimately in the 73-75F range. October, you get overnight lows in the 60s to sometimes high 50s, and daytime highs that don't get much above the mid-80s.
Though this year's been as hot and muggy of a summer as I can remember it, and unless we do get some cold weather soon, they may have to blatantly lie about finding 77F for a change.

This bouy is right there near the race. it replaced another from the past that used to be on the pier.
This will be my 10th ironman florida and I've done gulf coast half 12 times.
I'm sort of one of those worry about water temps folks since I'm slower swimmer so I've followed these bouys over the years.
One thing to note last night got down to 79 degrees hovering around 80 last week was 82. If you look at historic data last year on this date watertemp was hoverging
around 79 degrees....
Every year I look at it in sep or oct and its 80 degrees or 86 (earlier in month) and think oh no way going to drop but IT ALWAYS drops
last year it dropped almost to 70 degrees..
SO don't worry it will be below 78 almost guaranteed... always has been(I have all of them on polar temp just lap few times in swim) never even been close.
Now a few gulf coast in may have been non wetsuit but ironman florida its never been close to non-wetsuit...

Nope no magic thermomter every ironman florida has been wetsuit legal and well below think closest was 75 or 76(I'll have to go back check my readings).
My polar heart rate mon itor if you lap it during the swim will record temps.. In water its really close I've tested it a few times with another thermometer.
Every year its been wetsuit legal and the temps have been below 78...
Now gulf coast triathlon same thing I've done 12 of them and we've had maybe 4 in those 12 non wetsuit even one year the water was very rough but no funny business and no wetsuit..
Theres no games being played by race directors or officials on the water temps trust me if they say its 75 then its 75..
..
Historic data shows temps usually in 80's in september to start of oct then temps seem to drop pretty fast through october.
If they didn't then your looking at some nasty hurricane potential which sometimes happens and that drops the temps anyway.
IT will be wetsuit legal unless something very strange happens.

Well I'm going to have to go back on my prediction that water temps will be wetsuit.. I mentioned in other post temps always are in 80's in september then magically first of october
they drop quickly.. Well thats not happeneing.. The temps are around 83 to 85 have been for a while even the off shore bouys(noaa) way off shore are showing mid 80's.
I did some searching reports are all up the east coast water is warmer gulf hit close to 90 this summer water is warmer everywhere.
So looking like no wetsuits for first time in the 11th ironman florida race history.
Not looking good for a quick temperature drop unless a major storm comes through and with water temps that warm the temp will be least of our worries it would be a very bad storm.
So I'm predicting a runup in speedsuit purchases first week in november
I've watched water temps for years using those bouys and they have been dead on be it gulf coast triathlon in may or ironman florida in nov.
Just hope water is calm a combo of rough water and no wetsuits could make for some slow swim times.
So maybe we can go grab an iceburg pull it into the gulf and let it melt.. Put a little umbrella on top and make a very large mai tai.

Cold Front on Friday! w00t! I am so looking forward to be doing more than five mile runs without feeling like I'm gonna die of heatstroke midway through.
There is no such thing as irrational exhuberance on that matter since we're had a total of 36 HOURS TOTAL since early-middle June when the temperature/dew point got below 70F.
Friday 72F/52F
Saturday 70F/47F
Sunday 70F/49F.
Looks to be going back to normal mid-fall weather patterns (80F/60F) next week, so hopefully we're finally getting away from the heat for the year.

Personally I'm hopeing for low 80's for imf. Last year my feet got numb first 20 miles of the bike because of the cold.
Passed a few guys on the bike wearing compression socks and asked if they'd sell them to me for 20 bucks. stuffed a transition bag in my trisuit chest to keep warm.
This year because its after dst time change at least bike will start hour later in the day so warmer. Maybe 65 to 70 at the least by time hit the bike. I just have problems when its cooler just uncomfortable so I prefer it a bit warmer.
It's getting where none of the north america ironman races can be guarnteed to be warm. THought louisville would since it had been the first 2 years then this year it was chilly go figure.
Hawaii is only one pretty much. Might have to start doing lanzarote or cozumel to be guarnteed warm weather.
Just like the quick transition not putting on arm warmers or a top just going straight from water to the bike without changing but those cool starts make it tough for myself.
Its getting cold here in memphis this weekend only highs in 50's I froze last weekend long ride with temps in the 60's. not cold enough for lots of winter gear but not warm enough for just a jersey
and arm warmers.
I'm sure some of the northern athletes are thinking 50's and 60's thats not cold.
it will
All for it being cooler to help get water temps but most of the drop comes from the currents and water out in the gulf and right now even 100 miles out water is still mid 80's.

You should have been at IMF a couple of years ago when it was 38 Deg. with a 25 mile per hour wind at the start! Hopefully we won't see that again any time soon.

Early November is generally extremely predictable weather in the Panhandle- reliably in the lower-mid 70s for a high and somewhere in the 50s for a low. Lots more consistent than fall in the midwest.
It usually doesn't get weird and erratic in terms of temperatures until right around Thanksgiving.

pretty much all of them up and down the coast have been low to mid 80's even way off shore.. In past always below 80 first week in october.
So will take a bunch to cool down (panama city beach bouy is PACF1 its 83.8 just up the beach from race start even those east west and south out in the gulf are in the 80's
still..

That was 2006 I'm done every ironman florida except that one.. I decided not to go (burn out year) after doing a short ride weekend before just didn't like being on my bike so I decided not to go
when I watched online and saw everyone with jackets on and the wind blowing I knew I made the right choice might have been my first dnf(based on my mental state at the time)
This florida will be my 29th ironman. But I don't regret completely bailing that year not my kind of weather for sure I like it hot and humid.
First year since 1995 I hadn't done at least one ironman only year since then I haven't done one I guess you can say.
But never know the south east weather and mid south is very strange this year cool august cooler october rain more times than not so who knows what may happen
but with those gulf temps in the mid 80's the worse thing would be a tropical storm or hurricane come in from the atlantic with all that warm water.. Well lets just say it would make a great movie.

The cold front we're getting this weekend usually slams the door for storms in the northern and western Gulf. If there is a Florida Gulf hurricane yet this year it'll be a Wilma track that goes well south of PCB. (and with the way this year is going it would get eaten by wind shear somewhere off the western coast of Cuba)
I'm still thinking they'll get a legit 76F water temp on race day.

Only need it to get 78 inclusiive for age group and used to be 72 for pros but I believe they lowered that to 68 or 70 this year for the pros.
Last year was 78 degrees this date give or take took 5 weeks from 9/18 to 8/14 to drop from 83 to 78 so if its going to drop better hurry but its been pretty stable at 82-84 for last couple weeks.

That's because our overnight lows lately have consistently been a bitchin' 74-76F, which does make for much near shore cooling.

pacf1 bouy shows big drop to 79 already so looking good with temps next few days that low.... This is the latest I've ever seen them drop but looking good so far.
off shore temps are still high but along the coast most dropped below 80..
