I need a new front wheel, Suggestions?
Can't Post
I am looking for a new front wheel, im comfy in wind and want something fast. my rear wheels are hed jet c2 disc, open prow w/PT, Zipp 900 disc. All are clinchers so the front needs to be a clincher.
Im thinking:
-hed 3
-hed 3 deep
-jet 9 c2
-zipp1080
suggestions??
thanks!!!

HED 3 rocks...I read on their website that the HED 3 deep only helps if you average over something like 24 MPH..

HED3 is a great wheel. But, I'd rather roll the 1080 up front with a Zipp 900 disc.

Do you already have a front wheel? What rear wheel are you going to be using for racing -- the Zipp or the Hed?

okay so here it goes, One of the discs is going to get sold. THe other one I have will just be used for short races (because ill use the PT with disc cover for 40k or longer events).
At 40k TTs, I go fasster than 24 mph. so the h3deep would be a good choice. for that,
at IMCDA, I want to average between 20.5 ans 21 mph for the 112 miles.
FWIW, the zipp disc is probably the one that is going to get sold because I have a buddy who wants it and I like being able to true a disc which I Can do with the jet disc.

I'd go with the Jet 90 then.
I am not a fan of mixing wheels from different manufacturers- even when we are talking the coolest of the cool with Hed and Zipp :). I also think it will be more comfortable over the IM distance than the Hed 3, and it matches the Jet disc better. Looks are important right? The Jet will be rounder and truer than any composite wheel out there. Also - very little difference (if any) between all these wheels in terms of speed. I mean, are we talking *maybe* a few second over an IM? I can't believe it would be more than that under just about any situation.
So Jet 90 has my vote -- in case you care :).

Actually just pulled this from HED's website, for what it is worth:
1. Used as a front wheel the H3D is faster than the H3 out to 10 degrees of wind yaw angle. Generally this means that 25mph and faster riders will get a benefit from the H3D because at these speeds yaw angles are generally low. At higher yaw angles the H3 is a faster wheel which is why for the majority of triathletes where speeds are 25mph and less the H3 still tends to have an advantage.

I read that too, but im a bit nervous to commit to that wheel as I am only a 24+mphguy in 40k and shorter events (usually between 56 and 57 mins for 40k). That would be a sweer wheel just for 40k or less, maybe not the best choice for me for an all around wheel like sprint tri up to IM.

Yeah, that sure does seem like they have a very small market for that wheel...really only top pros can hold 25+ for those distances...

I still believe that a HED 3 and disc in the back is the fastest wheel setup....don't know how that would stack up against a 1080 front with disc rear but I think it would be close...

ok, as for the HED 3, will it be strange to run it with the jet disc since the disc is a c2 and the Hed 3 wouldnt be? I know it would be fine when using the PT wheel with a hed 3.

not strange at all
in fact, its a good thing. since aero matters more on the front than the rear
and rolling resistance matters more on the rear than the front.
put a 19mm bontrager aerowing TT on the front!

From the aerodata on the Hed page the Hed3 and Jet 9 would be the best choices.
But I really don't know what to make of the aero data on the HED page...Zipps scoring really bad (especially the 808Clinchers)...the Jet 9 and Stinger 9 both got new graphs recently in which both are a lot faster than before...Maybe they put an aerowing on the Jets...
I think you can't go bad with either of these wheels though!

I got a Jet90 C2 collecting dust right now if you're interested... Un-detailed pic of it on the recent P2C thread.

I prefer the tactile feel of a spoked wheel like the Jet 90 in comparison to my Hed 3 front. I know it's a fast wheel but it's not super comfortable, it feels a little different in turns(I think it's because laterally Hed 3s aren't that stiff) and though I've never left the Hed 3 at home because of wind, it really can be a handful for my 140 lbs.
Honestly, I'd be hard pressed to recommend a Hed 3 over a Jet 90 for just about anyone. I bet they're within a handful of seconds of each other over a 40k at most.
