What kind of morons created a rule like this in the first place? Does anyone gain an unfair advantage by having contrasting stitching on their underwear? Does the rules committee sit around and debate about what other stupid sh!t they can add?

The National Federation track & cross country uniform rules are written by control freak assholes with too much time on their hands, and it's been this way for 25+ years now.
I used to work track meets for beer money, and one of the things I was supposed to look for to verify that all hair scrunchies used were of a single color and if more than one athlete on a relay team had a scrunchie, then they had to be the same color.
I've also gotten yelled at by Rules Nazi coach from Team A because a rather large discus thrower from Team B was wearing sweat pants (single color, matched colors in singlet) that the asshole coach from Team A was convinced were not 'school issued'.
Me to thower: Athletic department issue you those?
Thrower: Yep
Me to coach: See there you go. If you wish to file a formal protest, go talk to Mac (meet manager) no later than 15 minutes after the conclusion of the event.
And he did go bitch to Mac, who promptly told him that if he ever wanted to be invited to any of Mac's meets again (Mac was The Guy you hired if your meet had more than 5-6 teams at it) then he needed to treat the event staff with more respect.

Hello WVTRIMAN and All,
We were watching the high school cross country meet at Kit Carson park here in Escondido, CA a short time ago and I noticed that several male runners had white compression shorts on under their uniforms.
http://www.flickr.com/...s/72157622536436223/
There were about 20 schools represented with from 10 to 20 people on each team.
One team had complete triathlon one piece compression suits instead of the loose jerseys and pants of most of the teams.
Only a very few had compression socks, although this guy is out front.
Did not see any Newton shoes.
Everyone ran a 3.1 mile course of 3 varied laps through the park.
Cheers,
Neal

No one could ever figure it out. We just went by what the control freaks in Kansas City dictated and checks for our matching hair scrunchies.

The rules were put in because cross is a team sport, and runners/coaches like to be asble to identify members of other teams. To prevent toeams from using different unforms they implemented the rules. That part makes sense, but of course some officials take it way way too far, such as in this particular case.

Just like WTC did when they did not enforce their no non racers going through the finish line rule. I guess WTC is going too far now also. So Steve, here again, some rules are okay to enforce, others are not.

Yes, WTC finish line policies are an extremely close parallel to unscrupulous high school cross country coaches who opportunistically use rules to their advantage. Keep practicing those analogies!

Dave,
there is a difference between having a cleaqr rule and note enforcing it, and having a rule, but taking the enforcement to ridiculous extremes.

How is this an extreme? I have seen many times where a team did not have "legal" uniforms and had issues. Is it not the coaches responsibility to have
their team meet the rules? If this was an extreme, how did the rule ever get approved? Why do so many love to second guess rules? Why do you get to decide which rule is "ridiculous extreme" and others are not?
Again, if you do not like the rules, do something else in life.

So just so I'm clear. You feel disqualifying a high school runner for having liner shorts with contrasting stitching on underneath regular shorts is OK?

Lets see, there is a rule. I assume we are still trying to teach our kids in high school right from wrong. The runner has to know what the rules are?
No way do I cross the line and start to judge if a rule is "good or bad". If I do not like a rule, I work to get it changed, not ignore it and say what a great
tough guy I am.
How about the basketball players that got impacted because their short were too long. I guess that rule did not matter either.
So, where in life do you draw lines on rules? Just which ones you think are worth following? Is this what you taught your kids, assuming you have some?

As an official, the NF rules are annoying and overly picky and go far beyond reasonableness when it comes to being able to identify members of the same team.
In terms of easily identifiable, at any large meet, you end up with multiple teams wearing virtually identical singlets (color, trim color, chest lettering of same color and font) and that's why there's always a bib number system in place (frequently supplemented with timing chips these days) in order to get everyone properly sorted and scored.

So, as an official, if the rule is "dumb", why not make the effort to get rid of it? Or were the folks who passed it just "dumb"?

At every rules meeting I went to over the years, no one was happy with the pickiness of the NF rulebook, and many people let the state rep leading the meeting that they were less than thrilled to be the hair scrunchie police. But we were never really listened to.
In the end, the only thing that would have gotten anyone attention would be for a large percentage of officials to arrange a boycott. As annoying as the rules are, it's not a hill anyone wanted to die on, so we just kept on bitching when we got the chance and the rules body never really listened.
And selective enforcement really isn't an option. If you're working a meet under Rule Book X, you follow Rule Book X as best you can, no matter how screwed up it seems. My old mentor (who officiated at USATF national events regularly and also worked the Atlanta Olympics) would have told me to just go home now if I felt like I was above the rule book.

I agree and fully understand! I spend less and less time in life wasting it on things like rules. Very few are worth the effort, and the reputation one gets just asking why is a rule the way it is.
Thanks for your work as an official.

"So, where in life do you draw lines on rules? Just which ones you think are worth following? Is this what you taught your kids, assuming you have some?"
I don't know where you're from, but in my world we have jury trials for people who are accused of really significant infractions. So yes, it seems fair just to follow the rules that are worth following and let others apart from a tyrannical body decide if you crossed the line or not. Keep the rule making separate from the rule enforcing. Let me point out the obvious here - the story makes the news precisely because the dq seems unfair on its face. If there were a criminal trial here, the verdict would very likely be "not guilty." You want a different system than that, do you. Why do you hate America?
When you care more about the rules than the event, you might find yourself the only person at your next race. No friends, no fellow participants. Just you and a big thick rulebook.
When it comes to rules, just do the right thing. Don't hurt others; don't look to gain an unfair advantage. The rules should naturally follow those principles. If they don't, then they're flawed. You can argue over the consequences of your supposed "infractions" later, but at least you'll have a clear conscience.

So I guess they should have not DQ'ed the top 2 female marathon winners since getting a drink or wearing an ipod for a few miles is no big deal.
I sure hope you never become an official in any sport. Since, with all the sports I played over the years, I sure never expected an official to decide
which rules for which game for which person to enforce in which way at which time.
