Indianapolis Marathon Can't Post

Is anyone doing the Indianapolis Marathon on Oct 17? My wife and I are in and we're looking for some input.

I did it last year as my first marathon and I'm doing it again this year as part of a team.

I did it last year as my first marathon as well. It is a beautiful course but offers a good mental challenge as all the half marathoners split off at 13 miles and the last half is an out-and-back with only a few hundred total competitors. Regardless, it is well run and quite enjoyable.

Does anybody know anything about the monumental marathon in Indy. I plan on doing the 1/2 to try to qualify for NY, but if it's hilly I may reconsider.

It is FLAT - no hills whatsoever. Should be a great qualifying opportunity.

In the half, miles 1-8 and 23-26 are the same as the full marathon.

The race is basically run in my backyard. The first half has a few small hills but scenic. The second half is basically running all the way down fall creek road and back which seems never ending. Weather should be about perfect but its Indiana, so who knows what you'll get. Make sure to bring your own nutrition/ gels as I believe there is only one aid station offering any sort of food.

Very well run and organized but if you are looking to set a PR or qualify for Boston, do the Monumental Marathon in November.

Ran it last year. A well organized race with a nice sized field. You will never be alone, yet the runners are spread out enough so you can run your own race unlike the madhouse in Chicago.

Why is the Indianapolis Marathon
http://www.indianapolismarathon.com/index.html
on October 17, 2009

and the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon
http://monumentalmarathon.com/
on November 7, 2009?

I have heard of spring-fall in a city, but not 3 weeks apart.

A couple of co-workers and I ran Milwaukee and had disappointing results and are considering Monumental.

Can you give some details or thoughts?

Re: Indianapolis Marathon [linhardt] [In reply to] Can't Post

Last year was the inaugural year of the Monumental Marathon. I was a bit confused as well when I heard it was going to be held 3 weeks after the Indianapolis Marathon. I'm assuming they thought Indianapolis was in need a full marathon course in the downtown area to compliment the mini marathon run in the spring.

I ran the Indianapolis Marathon (Ft. Benjamin Harrison area) last year so I did not end up doing the inaugural Monumental Marathon due to not having enough time to recover. I don't know any details of that race except that downtown Indy is very flat and the weather should be cool. However, I've run the downtown mini marathon numerous times and it is always my fastest half marathon time of the year. I plan on doing the Monumental in 2010 and hoping to qualify for Boston. I doubt there are many "faster" marathon courses out there.
