Ironman Florida Question Can't Post

If I finish in about 12 - 121/2 hours - will I need a headlamp for the run course?
I've been recommended to get one, BUT am reluctant to - just how dark is the run course?

With the clocks changing before this year's race you will be in the dark for most of the loop in the park. From what I remember of that area I would imagine it will be very dark in there after 5:30pm.

It's gets pretty dark out in the park and at 12:30 you will be in the dark. Having said that, I've done FL multiple times and didn't have an issue running in the dark. You see a few people with lights, but the vast majority navigate the course fine without.

I have unfortunately been in the park (on the old out and back run course) well after dark and there really is no reason to have a headlamp as there are giant portable floodlights every approx 100-150 yards. Not to mention if you plan on finishing in 12 1/2 hours you should be well on your way back into town where there are plenty of street lamps by the time it is completly dark. This is a triathlon not an adventure race.

If you use fins during the swim, you should have no problem finishing before sundown.

I've done IMF 4x and never had a issue with running in the dark. Kind of peaceful;-)

I agree....no need for a headlamp. Just one suggestion though: keep an eye out for the speedbumps in the park. This could end your race quickly if you trip and take a nosedive.

Enjoy the experience...wish I was there again this yr.

I've done IMFL 3X and always finished in the dark. You probably need to go 10:45 to finish in twilight.

No problem with light on the run course EXCEPT for the out and back portion in the state park, which is about 3 miles on each of the two loops. There are few to no streetlights in the park, but the RD does a good job and sets up 5 or 6 portable light stands which help a lot. Still, there are stretches of several hundred meters that are close to pitch black. But you'll have company, most of whom will be wearing/carrying glowsticks - helps.

It is a great race - I will probably do it again in 2010.

The goal then: Do not be in the park in the dark.

That'll be my goal anyway.

the race is saturday and the time change is sunday so the change occurs after the race is over (Approximately two hours after the race I think).

No the race occurs after the change - which is *tonight*.

I finished in twilight/dark last year, still wearing my sunglasses. That's why I'm not sure quite how dark it was. I wouldn't recommend this approach, but don't think a headlamp is necessary if I can do it in sunglasses! I thought it was getting hard to see toward the end, but I was a little out of it. I noticed the sunglasses in the photos the next day.

Re: Ironman Florida Question [SLC_vt98] [In reply to] Can't Post

I have been planning on my first full IM being Florida 2010. I planned on completing in 12 hours but having never done one who knows. The other race I have been considering is IM Arizona. I had actually not thought of finishing in the dark. Anyone able to compare finishing in the dark from Arizona compared to Florida?

Thanks!
