Is Lance's wheel on backwards? Can't Post

[from Vuelta a Algarve, GrahamWhatson.com]

Isn't the trailing edge of the HED 3 supposed to be the sharp edge, with the more rounded side as the leading edge? From what I can see, it looks the other way around.

His new "straight" aero bars are not really straight.

He's fat, too.

Well, relatively speaking.

When DuPont first manufactured the trispoke wheel, we carried them in the shop where I worked and Steve and Annie Hed came to work out of during Ironman. Steve was fascinated by the wheel, very impressed with the simple concept....the three spokes were designed like an airplane wing (or bird's wing), they create lift. Fat end first, tapering back, as air goes over the blade it creates lift.

He took one of the wheels, put it on a trueing stand, pointed a fan to blow across it. The wheel slowly spun around, endlessly. The perfect motion machine. Also, the more wind, the more lift, the faster the wheel spun. I always felt they were the perfect wheel for windy areas like Kona.

Later, I believe the Heds bought the rights to the wheel when DuPont was getting out of the bike design business, and he continued to manufacture them.

Yes, the wheel is mounted backwards. The threads on the hub are are the wrong side of the bike. We've had this discussion on another board. One member has seen the team mechanics flipping the skewers around, therefore mounting it backwards.

It also looks like he is "giving". Isn't he a "taker"?

Indeed, he may be carrying a few extra pounds, but for Lance the BIG race for him is not for four months. July 1 is when he needs to be truely lean and mean.

Years ago it was not uncommon for the greats of the time, Hinault, Merkxx, Moser, Kelly etc . to show up for the early seasons races visably overweight and then race themselve into shape through the very early races and the Classics.

These days with more on the line, most pro-bike racers seem to show up for the start of the season very fit and essentially ready to race all-out. However, I do notice that the really big players - Armstrong, Ullrich, Beloki et al tend to keep their heads low in the early going. However, Lance and the Postal Service team does seem to be in extraordinarily good form this early in the season.

Fleck, as they say, studs in Feb, lame in July. Lance is no stud now. His extra dough around the body will keep him well insulated and keep his immune system up in the cold early season races. He'll be a stud in July. By the way, Sean Kelly never showed up early season being soft. The man always won Paris Nice etc. Now Lemond was another issue altogether ! But man, could he race in July !

Gary, I still cannot believe your attention to detail. I'd hate to have you as a drill sergeant when I was a recruit in the military 20 years ago !

unless thats a very old wheel it would not have threads on the hub, all of Hed wheels are either front or back not enterchangable like the Specialized wheels. The threads were for threading on a freewheel

I know lance rides a h3 front but that wheel looks darker and shinier than any hed3 I have seen and I have and old black specialized3 and a new hed3. There used to be a wheel that looked like this one but I can't remember the name. I'm not arguing that it's not a h3 but just had a question. I realize angle lighting some wax etc could easily make it look different. Another point ie old equipment his breaks are vintage why not the wheel. I defer to clearer eyes and more experience.

Just goes to show you how LITTLE it matters about the equipment. I doubt Lance's time would have changed by more than a second if it had been turned around. Going fast is mostly about the engine.

Maybe he just wants the extra resistance...or has Steve Hed figured out something we don't know ;)

That wheel looks like a clincher. I don't know what Tom D and Bunnyman have to say about that.

I have 2 sets of Specialized and 1 set of HED3's and they are both very shiney like Lances'. I use wax on them, cause then its easier to clean, besides looking better. They all have the threads on one side of the hub. The black piece on the non-drive side of Lances' wheel covers the threads.

Re: Is Lance's wheel on backwards? [rocketman] [In reply to] Can't Post

I saw it i saw it... the mechanic deliberately changed the quick release to put the wheel backwards while Lance was in the trainer.

The mechanic changed it after a chat with a guy that i believe was a trek representative or something.

No, it was a veloflex tubular tire.

Beyond those little nitpicks. . .what about the QR flagging up in the wind like that. If you are going to go to the trouble of using dubiously better AX brakes, why leave the QR sticking straight up and trapping air agains the fork like that? Its the details, man. And I'm fingering the mechanics for that sort of stuff, not necessarily LA.

Guys, he can't be that worried about aerodynamics... he's wearing a standard helmet. He's probably just getting the kinks worked out of the fit and doing a little training while everyone is racing around him.
