Is There Hope (for my P3-SL)? Can't Post

I dropped my chain at mile 90 of IM CDA and mangled the front derailluer hanger on my P3-SL. At this point, the FD hanger is bent, broken, flimsy, and hanging on by a thread. Can a frame builder weld a new FD hanger onto the frame? Am I going to have to convert my tri bike to a fixie or single speed?

email a pic to an ally builder like www.rocklobster.com and get an opinion from the horses mouth.

Can it be fixed..yes..will it be easy..hell no. Would I trust this kind of fix to anyone but a skilled frame builder..absolutely not. If you're not feeling up to the challenge you could always strip the parts and sell me the frame cheap. What size is it?

Definately find a frame-builder closeby that can fix it. They will know how to line it up so it will work well again.

Thanks Chad. I'll give Steve Rex a call on Tuesday.

Kentiger,

I saw your response in another thread regarding repairing a cracked aluminum frame. You mentioned heat treating the frame after the weld job. A custom frame builder I talked to said the same thing (by the way, they don't have that kind of equipment, and he said that really only big time bike manufacturing plants do). Is heat treating equipment something that very few frame builders have access to? Is heat treating the bike an expensive proposition? Are we talking $500? $1000?

Because I am a frequent chain-dropper myself and fear damaging my own bike...i have to ask, how did you damage your bike so significantly 'just' by dropping your chain? Really just an honest question, not trying to be a smart-ass or anything.

depending on the extent of damage, it MAY be possible to remove the old hangar, file the area smooth and then rivet on or screw on (via drilled and tapped holes) a completely new hangar.

Where would you want to swim ?

My thought would be a non braze on derailleur, if the clamp fits.

a good idea, but that won't work on an alloy p3.

Just find a good TIG welder, and let him weld another one on there. The hanger is small, non-structural, and in the middle of a shaped structure that IMO won't require heat treating post-weld. I have done several small repairs like this on aluminum frames with no issues.
