Looking for Recommendations on Everyday Wheels Can't Post

I am building my first bike. Steel frame, ultegra all around. Looking for wheels. I don't want expensive, just some everyday clincher wheels. Give me your favorites and the store/web site you like to use. Thanks!

There is only one every day wheel.

32 spoke DT/Wheelsmith/Sapim
3 cross
DT / Mavic / Fir / Campagnolo rim
any Shimano or Campy hub.
brass nipple

Just about any LBS on earth can build you a nice set.

To simplify what was said, I would find a pair of 32 spoke Mavic Open Pro's, if you look around you should be able to get some new or very close to it for $200-$300.

ya mavic open pros are the ticket. w/Ultegra hubs is bombproof and really good bang/buck ratio.

Performance Forte Titans...seriously. They're very robust, especially considering the spoke count, and the price can't be beat. I've been rocking a set without issue nearly every day for almost 2 years. Plus, you can't complain about the Performance "100% Guarantee" ;-)

Mavic Aksyum. They are pretty much bombproof, and somewhat lightish. I picked up my last set for about $150 complete.

Call Hed...they will sell you the Bastone rims in either 32h or 28h...not for sale on the website's shopping section...they're $125 each...match them up with some Ultegra Hubs and you will have some sick wheels...and also a much better resale value then the Mavics.

Re: Looking for Recommendations on Everyday Wheels [OlderTriGuy] [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a set of Mavic Ksyrium Elites that I use as me everyday trainer. Great wheels. Have ridden them for approximately 3000 miles and hve never had a single problem with them. I bought them at my LBS - Jack & Adams in Austin, Tx. Any good LBS can help you. I'm going to be selling them soon here in ST classifieds because I just bought some carbon tubies and HED 3s for my tri bike and will be rolling down my Ksyrium SLs as my roadie training wheel.

Good luck - super happy with both sets of my Mavic Ksyriums.

buy some hubs off eBay or from Excel Boulder..call Hed for the Rims..then after you get the ERD for the rims..call excel boulder and tell them the ERD, Type of hub and how the wheels will be laced ie..2x,3x,radial etc...take all items to your LBS..have them laced up..thow on some wide rim tape and some vittoria open corsa evo cx 2s on them and enjoy

My faithful Velocity Aeroheads banged over their last set of railroad tracks a few weeks ago. These had been my everyday wheels for close 10 years. Sidewall on the rear wheel was bent/dinged. My other everyday wheels Mavic Ksyerium Equipes are now on duty.

Re: Looking for Recommendations on Everyday Wheels [OlderTriGuy] [In reply to] Can't Post

i have two recommendations:

1. if you're looking just for the best bang for buck, you can't beat neuvation. look at the prices, what you pay, what you get, you just can't beat these wheels.

2. otherwise, along other folks who've written here, i'm a fan of getting wheels built old style. in fact, i have several sets of just those kinds of wheels getting built up right now.

i wrote about this subject a few months ago.

Was wondering about the quality of the neuvations. Thinking of getting some of the 50 tubbies for my road bike just really for the hell of it. How much different than the quality of 404 tubbies? What says the man?

"Was wondering about the quality of the neuvations."

neuvation is founded/owned by john neugent, who's one of those veteran bike industry guys who sets up factories in asia for other companies. i'm not sure, i believe he set up the easton wheel factory. in any case, at some point you want to start doing this sort of stuff for yourself instead of always doing it for others, and neuvation is that effort for neugent. what you don't get with neuvation (or mavic, shimano, bontrager, easton, or anyone like that) is your local artisan wheelbuilder building your wheelset. but as factory wheels go, i think neuvation's hard to beat for what the OP said he wanted: just your garden variety good dependable cost-attractive wheelset.

Rol Volants. Fast enough to race crits/tris on, bomber enough to ride cx on. Sean Lambert is simply the best guy for customer service in the biz. Thet have a website you can order direct from: http://www.rolwheels.com/ These wheels are pretty amazing. I use the same set for cyclocross and road riding with no issues. Everything is top notch. They often have $50-100 "rol bucks" offers at local rides to keep the cost down.

My Lucero came with Neuvation wheels when I bought it three years ago. Nice looking wheels, 16 front, 20 back, bladed spokes, they have about 2000 road miles on them, a fair amount of trainer time and still haven't gone out of true. Nice wheels, spin smoothly, I've been really happy with them.

I like those neuvations! I am strongly leaning towards those. Can anyone comment on the ceramic bearing upgrades? Are they worth it? How about the $10 protection plan? Thanks!

+1. I have these too on my road bike. Get them at Performance bike for about $200 a set. I got fulcrum racing 7s for my tri bike training wheels and wish I had bought more fortes.

I love my American Classic 420. Very light which is great for climbing. Fast on the downhills Very sturdy (for me at my weight 134) & though not real deep could be used in a tri. Barb
