I like the sound of the bike course too. The hardest half IM bike course I've ridden to date was on the final day of the Ohio Triple T (after racing three times in the two days before!), so I'm anxious to see if this is even tougher.

Bob,
I'm so sorry I'm not going to make it. I lead 4 sessions of the Level 1 USAT coaches certification in Santa Monica today - 6 hours of me standing and talking!!! Brutal!! Then I went to tri lab to lead a Q & A with Macca and I just got home - it's 8:40p and I'm FRIED. I'm sleepin' in and licking my wounds tomorrow.

Negative for me. My wife is competing in a bodyboarding contest, and then we have my daughter's soccer game. I'm trying to figure out when I'm going to squeeze in a 60-mile bike. Enjoy the ride and report back!

My Pre ride report.
Jonathan Pauley sent me an email on the course and I got his permission to post it on ST. He covers it better then I could so it's below.
There were more people then I expected at the meeting spot. Big LA Tri club turnout. I noticed docfuel(Dick) so we did the ride together. It is a tough course, with little or no flat sections. The swim is a mass start. The lake was calm at 7:30...looks like it will be a good swim. Then you climb 7.2 mi out of T1...ouch.
Doc and I were running around the same HR 145-50 on the climbs. I'm sure doc was holding a little back so I could hang with him. We were both on road bikes with compacts and 12/25.....and I needed them. The climbs are covered well in the email. The descents can be dangerous. The descent on Old Road down to the dam is very rough, be careful! The road quality is like Vineman but IMHO rougher. I noticed several flats and a broken spoke.
The last part of the course is down hill....I'll need it:)
One thing, I THINK there is a traffic circle in the last few miles of the bike course. So be careful.
As for the road bike tri bike thing. I'm going with my tri bike but you would be fine/maybe better off on a road bike. My back feels better climbing aero.
It got very warm on our second loop so keep an eye on the weather.
Looks like it will be a good but a tough race..looking forward to it.
email
Robert, There will be 3 "NO-Aerobar Descents" on the bike to maximize participant's safety. The paved road is bumpy on Golden State Highway and participants will need to keep hands on the brake levers to maintain ultimate control. 2 descents on Golden State Highway will be designated this way. The first is for the 3 mile descent that starts at mile 11 and again at mile 25. The second no aerobar section on Golden State Highway starts at mile 21 and again at mile 35 on the second loop. The seven mile descent on Ridge Route is narrow and has many sharp turns headed back to Castaic Lake; this section of the course will have the same designation. **This is a mandatory rule and participants who violate this rule will be disqualified from the event.** There are 5 significant climbs on the bike course with a total elevation gain for the entire bike course at 5648 feet. Mile 0-7.2: (Total climb 7.2 miles), 4.5 percent grade, 1700 feet of ascent Mile 9-11 and 23-25: (Total climb 2.0 miles), 4.2 percent grade, 471 feet of ascent Mile 14-16 and 28-30: (Total climb 2.0 miles), 1.7 percent grade, 188 feet of ascent Mile 18-21 and 32-35: (Total climb 3.2 miles), 5.8 percent grade, 921 feet of ascent Mile 38-40: (Total climb 1.4 miles), 5.2 percent grade, 391 feet of ascent I hope this helps. I am looking for a positive race experience for everyone and I think as the word gets out about the race that the event will grow. I know the course has a few rough spots in the road surface but I wouldn't say they aren't any worse then you would find at Wildflower, Oceanside, Vineman or Santa Barbara. I have done all of those races multiple times and in many places the road surface is similar. With the exception of the the last mile of the 3 mile descent on Old Road most of the road surface is in good shape. Thanks for the positive feedback, Jonathan Pauley

I'm in! My wife's event got cancelled so I can go now.
I've had no structured training since IMC and we're leaving tomorrow for a week of vacation in Hawaii (no bike), so race day should be very interesting!
If anyone wants to split the cost of a room the night before PM me.

Yea, since you did not pre ride the course I would pace yourself till after the first loop.
Note: it's not a two loop course but you do two loops at the top. This is a rough section with climbing. By then you know the toughest parts of the course.
One thing, I THINK there is a traffic circle in the last few miles of the bike course. So be careful.

Jeez, this is sounding more like a military mission than the bike leg of a triathlon! :)

Jay, the road is not that bad, but there are some sections coupled with the down hill speed that could be a problem. This is why the no aero bar sections.
I did not see the run course, maybe someone could comment on it.
We need a half IM in the LA area. I think the race will be ST approved. Although from the posts it does not look like a big ST turn out.
Looking forward to a fun day.

I was on a ride today and talked to some guys doing the race. One guy said he was with five guys at the pre ride who were going to do the race. After the ride they all said forget it. What happened to HTFU.

Sitting on the fat-seat stationary bike at my hotel trying to get a better feel for the course! I've heard the run is pretty flat...anyone else have some insight on what we can expect on the run? Sounds like the bike is going to be fun!

Fred, I've also read that the run is pretty flat. Hey, eat a teriyaki chicken plate lunch for me while you're over there! See you on Friday or Saturday!
