What wheelsets are everybody using? and Tri bike or Road bike for this brutal bike course?
--------------------------------------
David,
I'm going with my tri bike but like I posted earlier you could go with a road bike. Docfuel and I both used road bikes on the pre ride with compacts cranks. The deal breaker for me is my low back feels better climbing in the aero position. Remember in some of the fastest sections you can't be in the aero position and this is a good thing(check post #38). The final section(from the lake to T2) would be your best aero section.

As for race wheels, I'm going with 606's. It's that or my training wheels and I'm not climbing with my training wheels.

I'll be using Stinger 6/9 set with my road bike...I'll try to get pictures up soon

I'll be on my Tri bike with my Hed Jet 50 PT rear and Hed3 front. I'm going to leave the wheelcover at home. Is the bike normally windy?

If I understand Dan, you are generally better off with your tribike. The climbs aren't that bad, but there are a few places where you might be standing.
That said, I'd guess that it's almost a toss-up. I am thinking about leaving the cover at home, simply because the one descent near the north end is REALLY cracked and bumpy and fairly fast.

I'm driving down to race (leaving Tuesday 10/06), and will also be putting on a Transition/Brick Clinic on Thursday 10/08, 5:00 - 7:30pm at Heritage Park in Santa Clarita, CA.
Description and sign-up information available on my most recent blog post, http://trikirkcoaching.blogspot.com

I've ridden the course and am familiar with the area. Sections of the bike course are quite rough. I've raced Auburn's World's Toughest as well as American Triple T, and I don't believe the Magic Mountain Man bike course is quite as difficult overall, although it does have sustained climbing whereas Auburn and Triple T have more rolling/shorter climbs. As many have mentioned, heat could add to the difficulty of the course.

Re: Wheels -- I'm going with Zipp 1080 Rear and Zipp 808 front, and riding my TT bike, LOOK 596 (rather than a road setup).

Looking forward to it and seeing many of you there!

As of right now, weather's looking like it could be pretty ideal for Saturday. Weak high pressure with near normal temps, which would mean around 80 for a high.

I had too much to do, so I just rode at Griffith Park and the LA River bikepath.

Just heard from a friend that's at registration that only 300 participants signed up for this. That's really too bad.

I was hoping this race would get good support as I think it's fantastic to finally have a late-season HIM in the LA area.

Ok...time to leave the office and fight traffic to registration myself!

I'm wondering if it's the Saturday race. I sure wish it was going to be on Sunday.
I can't take the day off of work, so I have to get up at 3am to get up there.
I wonder how many others are in that same boat.

I know Garc is going to be there, so I know it'll be a tough day.

Gary, Jay and Bob, I'll see you guys up there.
Who else is in????

A great day out there today. Incredibly challenging bike course, pretty warm on the run. Race report coming tomorrow. Still reading the Kona coverage that I missed today. Did log in just in time to see Crowie win though.

Starting right out of the water with that 7 mile climb and probably >5300' of the 5600' feet of climbing was in the first 36-37 miles was tough. Good thing it wasn't hot, although I wondered about you in the polypro long sleeve top. I wonder if I would have been better off with my road bike. Garc had his and we were right together for the whole middle part of the ride. The descents probably would have been faster and easier with it and the climbing might have been easier, too. (Running might have been tougher, though.) The tri bike was an advantage over the last 8-9 miles back to T2.

It didn't help that I ran about 10 minutes out of my way after a wrong turn when we first got on the bike path. I was at or near LT for the last 12+ miles (out of about 14.4 or 14.5 miles.) I finally caught and passed Garc with less than 1 mile to go, but he caught me at the finish and I couldn't hold off his closing sprint.

Re: Magic Mountain Man 1/2 IM- anyone else in? [docfuel] [In reply to] Can't Post

First of all kudos to Jonathan Pauley and his team at Renegrade Racing for envisioning this event. What a great option for a challenging late season half IM. A great race for a person peaking for a late season half IM or looking for a tune-up prior to IM Arizona. More to say later about the event in another post.

I managed to benefit from Dick's excursion as his mentions above. At about mile 12 on the run I looked around to see if Dick or Faron were on my tail. I did not see them so I thought (mistakenly) that I would be able to shut down and cruise into the finish. About 30 seconds later Dick motors by me and I think "oh no". I went from running 8 min pace to 7:30 pace, then to 7:15 pace as we inched closer to the finish. At about a quater mile out I mentally conceded to Dick, then I thought a few seconds later to make a move about 50 meters out and see if I could hold him off. I think in the end that Dick had to work so hard to catch me after making a wrong turn that he did not have enough kick left at the end. I haven't been this sore after a half IM in a long time. Dick you are awesome and I hope I don't to half to race against you when we both age up to 60 and make our attempt to qualify for Kona again.

Good to briefly meet "longboader" and "triboarder" (is this right) in T1 before the swim.

It was a great day and a nice, challenging course. The swim was nice. the water was surprisingly clear--I could see feet and bubbles. I've never done World's Toughest, up in Auburn, but this was pretty tough. That double mini loop (what was it? 12 miles for each loop) in the middle of the bike course up those hills was an interesting feature. I'm just glad it wasn't hot.

(Jane will probably kill me if I do another IM. HMMMM!)

I'm glad you were there. I knew that would make it a tough day. It was great to see Longboarder and his ever lovely wife, along with TriBodyBoarder. (Jay when are you going to bring your wife and kids.)

And, by the way, thanks for allowing me the use of your shower. It was nice to get out of my tri garb, wash off the salt and stink AND get into my clean dry stuff. My wife much appreciated my not showing up in my usual post-race state.

In 2 years we hit the big 6-0. That will be your Kona year.
