Magic Mountain Man 1/2 IM- anyone else in? Can't Post

Anyone else signed up for Magic Mountain Man 1/2 IM on October 10th up in Santa Clarita, CA? Just signed up yesterday to avoid the entry fee increase...

I am also thinking seriously about it and was wondering the same thing. Seems like it could be pretty cool. We'll see who jumps in on this thread.

The thread will likely get lost since I posted it late in the day. Might have to bump it tomorrow.

Hi! Jay,
I'm seriously considering it. Did I miss the fee increase?

You're good, from an email they sent out today: "Because we've been slow to advertise the cut-off dates for the entry fees we are extending early bird pricing 1-week. Enter by July 3rd and get in for $190. From July 4th the regular fee of $215 goes into effect. So don't wait, you'll want to be a part of LA triathlon history"

This bit sounds fun too: "Participants should have strong bike handling skills due to rough roads, long climbs and steep descents. The M3 Bike Course could be the hardest, most technical and ultimately the most rewarding bike course in the US. If possible we suggest that participants ride the course before the race. Renegade Racing has organized some pre-rides and you are invited to join us on the course.

Pre-Race Bike Course previews:
Sunday, July 19 (Approx. 32 miles)
Saturday, Aug 8 (Approx. 46 miles)
Saturday, Sept 19 (Whole Course)

All rides begin at Castaic Lake at 8:00am. July and August rides finish at Castaic Lake. September ride will finish in Santa Clarita; limited bike transport will be available back to Castaic Lake. RSVP for all pre-rides is mandatory - call Renegade Racing to RSVP at 949.975.1812. "

Forget speedwork. Speedwork is the icing on the cake and you don't have a cake yet. - MattinSF

Ha, ha. Yeah, I read that about the bike course too. Just got that email tonight. Scared me a little, but I love a challenge!

I drove the bike course some weeks ago and it IS as described. As soon as you get on your bike at Castaic Lake you encounter a very steep hill with plenty of corners. This climb last around 7 miles. You will have to go down this hill on your way bak. Getting fast here is pretty easy, but if you get too fast and are unable to corner, you are pretty much done.

The loop at the top that you do twice is also fairly steep but not as technical as this other section.

Since you road/drove the course recently...how was the road quality itself? I don't mind technical/hills as I mind bumping all over the place and for xxxmiles. Thanks in advance for any info.

Gotta love something that tells you that you will have a 5,000 foot climb!

It's not too bad, but there can be some imperfections here and there, cracks, little bumps, some little rocks, etc.
Ok, I found these pics on the net of the actual road. That whole hilly/technical section looks like this:

Maybe we'll have Santa Ana's that weekend and be crushing 5,000 feet of vertical with 100-degree temps. This race has the potential to punish! I like it!

Re: Magic Mountain Man 1/2 IM- anyone else in? [TriBodyboarder] [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi gang, I'm in for this one (still have to sign up though). It will be my first 1/2 so I am looking forward to it. Coincidentally, I just did my first tri in 15 years on this course 2 weeks ago. It was the Western States Police/Fire games olympic distance tri. The water there was smooth as glass and then we did the 7 mile climb up the hill. I thought the climb was going to be rough but it wasn't bad. I drove the course the night before and thought I should have brought my road bike instead, but once I was actually racing, it was no problem. I think there was only one or two spots on the long downhill that I had to touch my brakes. Much of the time I was spinning out my 53x12. It wasn't as technical as I thought it looked from the car. It definitely helped driving the hill first because I knew the few sharp turns. Also, the long downhill gave my legs a nice rest before the run as it literally drops you off right before the transition (if the transition for M3 is in the parking lot).

Good luck to everyone and I hope to meet some STers out there.

Yea, my plan is to do the swim/bike then see how far I can run/walk. I don't feel any pressure since I should not be out there in the first place.

I was looking for a late season half so this worked out great.

BTW: the water temp up here is in the 50's. It was 55 when I swam yesterday at CDM. It's been windy all week including today(:

PS: thanks for the heads up on the race.

I'm 50/50 right now on racing - waiting to hear about a travel conflict. However I'm 99% sure I'm coming out to ride the course Saturday. They had fliers in the Malibu Goodie Bag that said "European style bike course" - I LOVE what that conjures up!!!!

The RDs are GREAT people and I hope this race takes hold, it could be a real epic and we could use that kind of fresh triathlon blood in the So Cal race calendar.
