Good riddance Michael Johnson
Bolt is the greatest ever.
Watched teh replay, he was eying the clock all the way down the last 50 and took a great lean at the line. He wanted the WR.
Great sportsmanship and calss from the Americans to come over and lift Bolt up in celebration of his accomplishment.

Hope everyone complaining that he didn't run through in the 100m is happy now.
19.30 into a 0.9 headwind :)
Also heard in our into that he won the world U20 200m as a 15 year old.
Surely no male has won the 100m and 200m in World Record time at the same Olympics (happy to be corrected - maybe Owens?)
Will never forget either performance

I actually like MJ - he does great commentary for the BBC. Bolt's dancing now - hopefully his celebration meets with the approval of the ST sportsmanship police.

It's Usain's birthday today and when they mentioned it to the crowd all 90,000 of them sang "Happy Birthday Too You" over and over again. How cool would that be!

Not at the Olympics, but Jesse Owens did the equivalent (and then some) at the Big Ten champs in 1935. He followed that up with 4 golds in Berlin.
from wikipedia, (so you know its true).
Owens' greatest achievement came in a span of 45 minutes on
May 25
,
1935
at the
Big Ten
meet in
Ann Arbor, Michigan
, where he set three
world records
and tied a fourth. He equaled the world record for the 100 yard (91 m) sprint (9.4 seconds) and set world records in the
long jump
(26 feet 8¼ inches (8.13 m), a world record that would last 25 years), 220 yard (201.2 m) sprint (20.7 seconds), and the 220 yard (201.2m) low hurdles (22.6 seconds to become the first person to break 23 seconds). In fact, in 2005 both
NBC
sports announcer
Bob Costas
and
University of Central Florida
professor of sports history Richard C. Crepeau chose this as the most impressive athletic achievement since 1850.

Is it true that Bolt crossed the finish line with his parents, siblings, and assorted kids in tow? Now that would be a Slowtwitch moment!

Why no love for Johnson? I always thought he was a very classy guy both on and off the track.
Hats off to Bolt, what he has done is pretty incredible. Wonder if he has the endurance in those gangly legs to go for 400m too?!

Don Quarry was the last to hold both records simultaneously. But he didn't do the Oly double and he didn't set the 100m at the olympics either

NBC reported that he wasn't interested in longer distances because of the training required.

Why no love for Johnson
Johnson was a bit of an ass in '96. Claiming to be the world's fastest man.
His act...tossing the shoes into the crowd after the race was just a bit much.
Disclaimer:
I know Donovan casually, we're not 'friends' but grew up in the same town and travelled in the same circles. We even worked at the YMCA together in 1994 helping organize a 10k fundraiser.

IIRC it was the US media that went with the fastest man crap. They tried to push it by saying the second hundred was faster than Donavans first. Johnson bought into it though so you are right and no disclaimer is needed.

Fair enough, I didn't know that.
If he's not so popular in North America I guess that might explain why he commentates for the BBC and writes for a UK newspaper. Has to be said that he is outstanding at both - takes a very strong stance against doping (including giving back his 'tainted' relay medals before he was asked to by the IOC), always very insightful, and always calls things as he sees them. He was very critical of the levels of professionalism of young British sprinters a few years ago and caught a lot of flak for it, but when they got their act in order and won gold in Athens he was the first to praise them. Has also been very magnaminous about losing his 200m record to Bolt and in fact his visible excitement at watching and discussing the talent of Bolt was a pleasure to see. Maybe leopards can change their spots!

Looking forward to watching this later tonight. As for Johnson, another example of his classiness is when he dedicated one of his gold medals in '96 to the woman who was killed in the Olympic Park bombing.
