Great article, I've been running injury free in Vibram Five Fingers for a year.

Years ago those guys were going to do I think the Weatern States 100
sponsored by a shoe company. Preparing for the race on a training run
they passed a trash dump with some tires in it. They stopped got their
knives out and had themselves some shoes and did the race in the tire shoes.

A couple of questions for you:

Did you find your pace slow dramatically with the Vibrams? In the video the "barefooters" obviously weren't maintaining too quick of a turnover because of the author I assume.

How long was your adaptation period? I thought the people from Ecco were talking about a 6month weening process from "traditional" running shoes to the extreme minimal minimalistic-style shoe

Will you race in those as well?

6 months is about correct. Since I run ultramarathons, I don't exclusively run in the Vibram 5 Fingers. A refreshing change in shoes is needed from time to time over the long miles (which of course involves a subtle change in running form), but 6 months is a good enough time to get accustomed to having no built up heel while you run.

I developed a high cadence, it took about 2 weeks for me to get fully adapted. My runs started very short and eventually got up to my normal length of 6-10 miles. My guess is conventional running shoes allow you to run longer and harder than you ever should.
