Re: Olympic 10K swim [Mito Chondria] [In reply to] Can't Post

The addition of a "sport" like this kills me. Legitimate sports like baseball & softball are being eliminated, yet we see sports "invented" for "B" team athletes constantly added to the program. For example:

1) Distance swimming - Can't make it in the pool, so we'll give you the chance to swim in a lake. I'm sure this will be a humdinger of a spectator event.
2) Tandem Synchronized Diving - Enough said.
3) Rhythmic Gymnastics - I like the beam, high bar, etc. as much as the next guy. But to see those who couldn't make the major league team get the chance to prance around with a ribbon & a ball? Travesty.
4) Trampoline - Again, more gymnasts who couldn't make the "A" Team

And don't give me the "well they've trained their entire lives for the chance." In most neighborhoods, diving next to another guy wearing a speedo, or prancing around a gyn with a ribbon on a stick would probably get you beat up. I really think the IOC needs to take a long hard look at what they are doing, because some of their decisions have gone beyond ridiculous.

And Olympic baseball has had "A" team athletes before? Maybe if you're Cuban...

Maybe if you're American. Some of these 'fringe sports' as you seem to call them, tend to be very popular elsewhere.
Distance swimming is extremely popular in Australia. Grant Hackett tried it and wasn't better than the others, but it's not like he couldn't make it in the pool.
Diving disciplines, and other such sports are extremely popular in China.

'In most neighborhoods...'...man...where do you live?

In most countries, seeing a bunch of fatlards waiting for hours to hit a ball with a stick, will hardly be considered a sport ...

How do you feel about having the marathon at The Olympics? How is the OW 10K any different?

The post calling open water swimming a fringe sport needs to be read in conjunction with the thread on why the US doesn't dominate Olympic triathlon.

I know that many Americans would love to have football, baseball and softball in there. But as the World Series in baseball shows, this American Sport really doesn't need the world, so why would the world need this American Sport at the Olympics?

:-)

Why not add NASCAR, bass fishing, noodling, competition eating and Walmart shopping to the Olympics? How about a gold medal for the most obese nation in the world?

Re: Olympic 10K swim [Francois] [In reply to] Can't Post

I am American, but let's keep things in context.

You gave one example of where distance swimming is "popular." To continue using baseball as an example, the sport is just not popular in the U.S. It is huge in places like Japan, Cuba, Taiwan, Korea, and Canada, and has started taking a foothold in places like Australia, - which has produded a number of Major Leaguers - Europe, and Russia.

Don't give me the "fat guy" retort either. These "Fat guys" have mastered the toughest skill in any sport: hitting a 5" diameter ball traveling at 95+ MPH from a distance of 60' 6". Other "fat" guys throw it that fast. Say what you want, but in my book, it takes a lot more skill to be able to do this than say row in a shell, paddle a canoe or ride a bike, for example.

Finally, you're missing my point. Sports like diving and gymnastics are outstanding. I'm saying that adding stuff like the ball, stick & ribbon, or doing things in tandem is ridiculous when the sports are already established. To use another baseball comparison, why not add homerun derby or wiffle ball to the program? As much as I love the game of baseball, those ancillary events wouldn't fly with me.

Thanks for the correction, got diameter & circumference mixed up. As for the poster immediately in front of you, odds are he was one of those guys who grew up not being able to throw, or (good grief), playing soccer.

Those same neighborhoods you would also likely get beat up for wearing the really tight "pants" like in baseball. And I KNOW you would get beat up for slapping another guys ass, like in football.

Baseball and Softball are hardly worldwide sports. As far as I recall, only teams from two countries compete in the 'World Series'. They barely, if at all, meet the Olympic criteria for global participation and even when they do, the best players that actually play the sport don't even want to go to the olympics. Not only that, but baseball has a major PED problem which thus far it has required intervention by the Gov't to get the players, owners to even think about addressing. Better off without it I think.

No wonder the US can't compete in mathematics, either. Sheesh.

(hint: if the diameter is ~3", the circumference is around 9" (pi * diameter); still not close to 5")

Please define legitimate.
Then I would guess triathlon is a sport for "C" athletes who cannot run nor bike nor swim?

Re: Olympic 10K swim [T.J.] [In reply to] Can't Post

As an american who competed at a high level in the Open Water circuit in the mid-90's I can say that it is a small but growing sport - but definitely has a very loyal following. And since it was around since well before I started open water swimming I would hardly say that it's recently been invented. Open Water swimming is what triathlon used to be back in the 80's before, as everyone here always bitches, it became so popular. In fact open water swimming probably would be more popular in the States if so many people weren't so fearful of open water (just think about how many race reports where people just go into the swim to finish).

[hitting a 5" diameter ball traveling at 95+ MPH from a distance of 60' 6".]
Which is called hand/eye coordination.

[it takes a lot more skill to be able to do this than say row in a shell, paddle a canoe or ride a bike, for example. ]
No it just takes different skills.

But is funny has some of those hand/eye coordination sports should not be part of the Olympics and yet Baseball should be.
