PSA - Hooker SL brakes (not mine) Can't Post

Saw these on Ebay today while looking for something else and killing some time.

If I had the money to buy these, I would be all over them.

Ooh - thanks! I'm on em ;)

great shape - I only can use the front though. Not worth messing with the hanger for the rear

If you buy the set, I'll buy the rear from you. I can make a rear work on the front of a Bayonet fork, no problem.

Seriously.

Yikes - well, I just ran the bid up to $325 now ... I'll see how I feel this evening ;) I'll let you know if I end up with them.

Just an FYI for anyone considering the purchase of these brakes: in addition to needing a cable housing stop for the rear brake, you also need to figure out how to deal with the fact that the pads face the wrong way at the wrong angle, at least when mounted in the normal position (i.e., on the back of the seat stays).

What I did was adjust the height of the brake so that the (shorter original) pads hit the brake track and only the brake track, and simply counted on the little set-screws to hold the pads in place. gregclimbs, OTOH, had to trim his (longer 2nd generation) pads, and replaced the set-screws with wood screws for more security.

OTOH, if you want to use the rear brake on the front, no problem: just replace the short mounting bolt with a longer one (easy to do, since unlike a conventional brake nothing pivots on the bolt) and you're good to go.

You do not see these very often on Ebay and if I did not just max out my ebay purchases for the month, I would be all over these.

Yea, They dont come up that often; I think the rarest thing that I ever saw come up (bicycle related) on ebay was a Bursford which came up and sold for around $2k (about 1/10th of original 'retail') a couple years ago. I was actually the first to bid on these brakes, but one of you guys must have out bid me...darn, I was hoping that it would go unnoticed :^ ( Arrrrrrr.

What makes these brake so aerodynamic?

Is it the smooth lines, compared to more traditional brakes.
Or is that the overall brake is so large and smooth it provides a fairing of sorts for the bike?

It probably has more to do with the fact that nothing sticks out beyond the "footprint" already created by the fork.

They are not very big at all and there are a great thread (link below)with pictures on aero brakes going on which has some pictures of this brake mounted (page 2 I think) and they are small and aero.

Re: PSA - Hooker SL brakes (not mine) [BMAN] [In reply to] Can't Post

The only ones smaller are the Modolo Kronos. For those who have not held all these aero brakes in their hands (modolo, zipp, MRC, campy, AX, weinmann, magura hs77, scott superbrake (similar to the tektro sidepull), Im sure that Im missing something here); the modolo kronos were the smallest of the bunch. I have heard that many suffered from fracture in the brake arms, but the two calipers which I have are fine (one that I "use" on my race bike, and another one for parts when I eventually will need it). The modolos dont brake as much as slightly slow you down...it is kind of like a tandem, you have to plan ahead a little.

Im not sure how the rest actually work. I have held them, and either not owned them (such as the hooker) or dismissed them as being bigger than what I had, with no appreciable increase in stopping power. I am thinking about switching to an AX caliper sitting in my parts box, as I have heard that stopping power is better, but that will have to wait.

If I had the hooker, I would definately switch to that, as it just always seemed a stronger brake than the modolo; without much sacrafice in size.

I bailed just a bit above that. I consoled myself by ordering a set of these:

Very nice! I've seen them, but can't remember the name. Going to run a canti type cable routing in front of the headtube?

Good choice Bob...even with the full cable housing coming down to that brake instead of a bare internal cable, by my measuring it's as fast (if not slightly faster) than even my "Poor Man's Aero Brake" Tektro modfication ;-) By my estimation both are pretty darn close to the drag of the Hookers...

I didn't realize that Matt had them up for sale already.

I fear I may have let a cat of its bag. I've been corresponding with the manufacturer by e-mail for a while. I got an e-mail from him offering the opportunity to buy. Maybe it was a preliminary offer to a few folks for "field testing" purposes. (I'll have to go re-read the e-mail.)

He posts here, so if he's ready for the world to order them, I'll leave it up to him to say so.

Funny thing is, I had just put up my bid for the Hooker brakes when I got his e-mail. It didn't matter. The price on those hookers blew right by my offer like it was standing still.

A set of brakes that are legendary for their low aerodynamic drag (and probably for their low stopping power, but I don't really know about that). They were made quite a few years back and have been coveted by aero-weenies ever since. The pair that were just up for auction looked quite nice.

It has to be Matt right? They look like the proto-type versions on the first page of his post that he did.

I was on his website right after I saw your post and there was only the proto's on there but no finished product.

They certainly look like Matt's. In that photo, the finish is looking better too!
