Packing for International IM
Can't Post
IM Cozumel is my first international Ironman. I am asking for a laundry list of items you guy think are important to bring along. My concerns are Montazuma's Revenge and the Swine Flu. Is there anything else I should be concerned with? Anything else I should do (or not do) in the days leading up to the race ? I'll be in Mexico a week before the event. Thanks

I am not packing differently than a fly-to ironman.
If I drive I take everything but the kitchen sink, but with flying I try to a minimilist.
I use "special k 90 calorie bars" on the bike. I will buy that in the states as I don't think I will find that in Cancun/Cozumel.
I always take pepto-tablets to Mexico, but they are widely available at local drugstores.
Beyond that I am taking clothes/shoes that I can wear and leave. For Mexico and similar countries I take retired shoes, wear than during the day, and then leave them for the cleaning crew. In the past trips I have "donated" 10 pairs of 500-mile Brooks, which I am sure have gone to good use by the locals.

Get some Ciprofloxacin from your doctor in the event you do get some sort of food poisoning or other bacterial infection. Was told I could take it prophylactically, but I'm not going to chance it. I'll have it just in case though.

Don't forget your bike ;)
For Lanzarote I made sure to pack all the gels and nutrition I wanted for the race, do not rely on the local market to provide. The obvious is do not drink the water. When you buy bottled double check to make sure it is sealed. No drinks with ice.

Did IM Brazil once. Take a Mastercard, Visa isn't everywhere you want to be. Odd, but there was a 1 to 10 ratio of Visa acceptance to MC around 2004. Maybe it has changed since then...just be prepared maybe with a few different charge cards, it's hard to tell in other countries what they'd accept south of the border.

clearly nose plugs are in order.
the fact that you are willing to leave the protection of the united states is quite impressive. do you have kidnapping insurance or ransom money safely socked away to pay for your release? do you have body armour to protect yourself from the hail of bullets directed by criminals towards white tourists whose wallets are typically filled with a fortune, i.e. $30 or $40?
in addition to getting your will and affairs in order, these are the things i would be preoccupying myself with if i were you, not what to pack or race day details.

That is one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. Are there any that depict how residents of "Here Be Dragons" view the USA?

Going to Cozumel? You should be taking your scuba gear as well as your tri bike.
