Palm Desert CA - Riding/Training
Can't Post
Is this a good area to be based for a one to two week training stint?
What are the roads like for cycling? I can see some mountains (San Jacinto)
Pools?
Thanks.

Do you have a choice in the destination? If not, make it work for you. If so, why not do area around Clermont?

My apologies. Perhaps I did not make this clear, this is not a find me a training vacation place question thread. I specifically want to know about Palm Desert. Yes, this may be the choice. It looks like it has some possibilities based on looking at Google map and satellite shots.
Clermont is nice. I have been there in the past.

It's flat and windy..Some great runs up San Jacinto, but I dont think too many paved roads. Think of a dry, windy, Florida, lots of blue hair driving around in big cadillacs....

Its great for trail running, and there's a few hills around there, but more or less flat. There are places to ride, but its really windy. Unfortunately I don't live there so that's about all the details I can give you. I'm about 30 miles west. If you want a good climb, come to Redlands and go up the 38; its about a 30 mile ride up a 5% grade going over 8k feet.

I train in Palm Desert myself during the winter (I'm a Canuck Triathlete looking for warm refuge between Nov-Apr).
As mentioned by others, it can get windy (to the north you'll get sandblasted if you don't watch out), but temperatures are good and little humidity. Lots of asphalt to ride through the streets of the communities within the Coachella Valley (bike / golf cart lanes available too).....& in most cases drivers are relatively courteous, but like anywhere there are exceptions. Many days you'll find members of the Palm Desert Cycle Club out on group rides.....see
http://www.cycleclub.com/
(I usually hook up with them on Sat morns). Lots of hills if you have a mountain bike and go on the trails....as far as hills on the road, I ride the "La Quinta Cove (not that tough)" or ride the Palms to Pines Highway (HWY #74?....challenging). You'll see many a cyclist out on the streets.
For swimming, I usually go to the Palm Springs Swim Center in Palms Springs (
http://www.discoverourtown.com/...ecreation/72450.html
). I think admission is $3. Otherwise, I "splash" about in our gated community pool.
If you're there during Feb, check out the "Tour de Palm Springs" century ride and the Palm Springs Half Marathon. Both fall on the same weekend this year (2nd week of Feb).
Hope this helps........

Maybe someone else can chime in but I remember a bunch of hilly rides out there in and around Joshua Tree and also the opposite way out of Palm Desert (I think down and around the 74 and 371). But, I might have been imagining that; I'm not really sure.

i lived there for a couple of years. loved running some of the trails in the desert. actually running in the desert there has been my favorite place to run and i have lived all over the country. very peaceful and only saw people every now and then. yes it is windy at times. on one of the roads near the hills i averaged over 20mph several times and never turned a pedal. never was a big fan of cycling there though. there are some routes just not enough but i am spoiled coming from the south. and when they say plenty of blue hairs they are not kidding. you must really keep your senses about you and just be ready to take a few deep breaths. i never road all the way up in the mounatins because i was a little paranoid with the folks driving up but i had some friends do some rides up there and they seemed to enjoy it.

Between now and April Palm Springs area is awesome to train. I think the wind that people have mentioned is mostly in early spring time because the many times I have been there I only had issues at this time. Good mountain road biking. There is a strong road cycling group that meets a few times a week. Good pool with open hours in Palm Springs about 15-20 minutes from Palm Desert. Running the hard pack sand desert trails is good for lower impact. I'll be there myself for a week or two around Christmas. This area has been used over the years by many road cycling teams for winter camps and triathletes such as Scott Molina has based there I am told.

Ben,
Thanks. It's a mid-winter option that we are looking at. Normally we go to Tucson, but my Father and Step-Mom are contemplating renting a place in Palm Desert for the month of Feb or March. If they pull the trigger on this, we would switch over from a couple of weeks in Tucson to Palm Desert.

Mitch is definitely the man to contact.
No so hilly if you head from PS up to Idyllwild or the reverse side up to Idyllwild.

From Palm Desert you could also make a few day trips. We have some good riding around Redlands, about 50km West of Palm Desert, I would be happy to take you guys on some good rides. Could also make a day trip out to the epicenter of Slowtwitch - Xantusia. Probably about a 90 minute drive. San Diego / OC are also not that far off for day trips.

What's with everyone?
Palm Desert - the whole Coachella valley - it's a great place to train - ride, swim, run, etc. ! Yes, it can be hot (in the summer ) - but this time of the year - fall/winter - it's usually not hot. It can be downright cold in the morning - but then the sun comes up and warms things up. The wind? yea - usually in the afternoon - - - so you go in the morning. There's nothing like the sun coming up over the desert and absolutely no wind (the usual thing). Good paved roads all over the place - no traffic if you just get out of the city - a matter of minutes ! Swimming pools all over the place - just be creative. Running ? great desert running - hills, flat, tracks, streets, trails .... Many interesting destinations. Mt. San Jacinto ? trail running up the gungees (sp?) of every type. I don't live there (San Diego ) - but it's a great place to train! PM me if you want some specifics.,

Some reconn. on Google Maps showed to me that it had some potential. I was surprised to hear the responses of some folks who said it was not that good.
Hey, where we are coming from anywhere from Dec - Apr, anything looks good!

With a short(er) drive to Lucerne you've also got the climb up to Big Bear. If you want a real big boy/girl ride you can descend the other side then climb back up to Big Bear via Waterman Canyon.

Hi Fleck,
As some others have said, Palm Springs is a fantastic venue for training (especially Feb/March). The desert has every kind of riding imaginable from 130 miles of pancake flats to your choice of two huge mountain ranges. The Palm Springs pool is spectacular:
During February the Portland Ironheads will be in town for one our training camps so there will be plenty of people to train with. You’re welcome to drop in for a ride with us.
Feel free to contact me offline with any questions.
