Riding weekend destinations from SF bay area
Can't Post
A few friends and I are planning a weekend riding trip/guys weekend some time after Thanksgiving. Last year we did Solvang (Mt Figueroa climb on one day, and a few shorter routes on other days). We're starting to plan this year's trip, so I'm looking for suggestions on good destinations. Criteria are:
- decent chance of non-rainy weather and non-snowy roads (temps in the 50's or higher a huge plus)
- not more than 4ish hour drive from San Jose
- nice scenic riding (if you have route suggestions on mapmyride or similar, that would be awesome)
Rider abilities are all over the place, so we're not looking for uber-difficult rides. Ideas so far are:
- Solvang (again)
- Santa Barbara
- Palm Springs, Death Valley, San Diego (all violate the 4 hour driving rule, but we might consider a longer drive or flying).
- Tahoe, if we go early enough to beat the snow.
Ideas?
Thanks,
John

If you're willing to head north instead, I hear the scenery in the Mendocino area is nice. I'm not sure what the bike routes are like, but I have been thinking about doing a ride up there. I know the Tour of Cali had a stage starting in Fort Bragg and heading down the coast.
If you want to have other guy weekend activities though, it may not stack up well with your other choices.

If you wanna do Santa Barbara, you can go Gibraltar->Camino Cielo down painted cave/OSM. Camino Cielo is very nice and scenic :-). Other than that you can ride up to Solvang on the 154 then to the Figueroa climb (approx 100mi round trip). There are also some nice routes that start from downtown like the sunday worlds route or the lake loop. Around this time it shouldn't be too cold in SB too.

What Tour of Cali would that be? There's never been a stage that far up the coast.
John--what about a Sonoma weekend? Stay up in Healdsburg or Geyersville and then lots of riding up there. Or Auburn, though you'd need to keep an eye on the weather. Or stay in Napa/Yountville and you'd have many options.

Sonoma, Napa, north coast is all beautiful riding. My only concern with heading north in Dec or early Jan is the very high likelihood of getting rained on.

Ah, if you are not going until January, true about the rain.
Also out of your 4 hours, but Death Valley would be fun.

Sorry, you're absolutely right. I got confused because I remember reading about a route up there with some connection to the tour a while back...it was probably someone's suggested or desired route.
I agree that heading north (and to Tahoe for that matter) is probably too risky for rain in Jan.

Yup. I think that the "when" will mostly define the "where". We're all getting together for dinner next week to do some planning. If it's right after Thanksgiving, we might be able to pull off something north, or even Tahoe. If it get's delayed 'til after Christmas then we'll be heading south for sure.
