Sailfish Wetsuits Can't Post

They are new and many european pro's are using them (http://www.sailfish.com/athleten.html). I haven't seen that many US pro's on it in North America events but I do see some great swimmers on the above list (Javier Gomez, Pontano, Llanos, Luc Van Lierde, etc).

So I was wondering for those who own or have tried one, what's your opinion?

And since you brought this to life I must add that since then I've tried Sailfish One, Aquaman Gold and Blue Seventy Helix.

I thought the last two were way better but now there's one "gold" Sailfish too. Still, I believe Aquaman's Gold is the best for fast transitions but Helix just "feels faster" in water.

Both are tremendous in terms of flexibility so it's hard to compare on that point.

Re: Sailfish Wetsuits [Klep] [In reply to] Can't Post

as i recall, jan sibberson was the european, or at least the german, importer for xterra wetsuits (jan sibberson being for many years long distance triathlon's fastest swimmer). there was a year, 3 or 4 years ago, where xterra's dealer service and customer service was very spotty. xterra's then-owner/manager, keith simmons, had a lot going on and in my person opinion didn't pay as much attention to his customers as he might have. keith i think realized that, and now xterra is under a new/different ownership/management structure and for the past couple of years it's being run in a very efficient, forward-thinking manner.

but during that tough year i think jan was frustrated and he wasn't willing to simply let his wetsuit distribution business just wane and waste away. so, sailfish was born.

i don't know how i know this, and maybe i just dreamed it up (jeez, i hope not). but this is what bubbled up from deep in my memory banks. if anyone has any better, truer recollection, please chime in.

i have never been in the sailfish wetsuit. i would agree with you that the aquaman is a very nice wetsuit, and i think rappstar believes it the best one-piece he's ever used. likewise, the blueseventy is a "mature" suit, and i think any new wetsuit brand is going to need 2 or 3 years in the market to get to a stable point, where the patterns are good throughout the size run, quality is good, neck closure, zipper base (all the usual issues) are solved, and the company's owners/designers can move to that next point, where they make a superior suit instead of just a competitive suit. is sailfish there? i have no idea. maybe we'll evaluate one this year.

I tried out a Sailfish One at a demo day and ordered one on the spot. I liked the fit and the flexibility, but I absolutely loved the attention to detail in the materials and where they put thicker panels. I felt very floaty but VERY stable in the water. Plus, whatever they use for a liner made the suit come off very easily. Given the economy, I think they are doing a slow roll out, but I know they do lots of demos and are planning to be at a bunch of IM and 70.3 races. I contacted chris@sailfish.com for follow up.

I'm far from a great swimmer, but this suit seems to help a lot.

Just my 2 cents.

For what's it's worth, I just tested the Sailfish wetsuits over the weekend, along with the BlueSeventy range. I am no expert in wetsuits, but the Sailfish G-Range was pretty much the runaway favorite amongst myself and the other testers that I spoke to. To me, it felt much faster than the Helix, and much more flexible. I am not sure what Sailfish distribution is like in the US, but it's pretty popular here in Spain, with a lot of pros using them.

From my experience, the US distribution is great. I got my Sailfish One wetsuit and Furious Speedsuit about 5 days after placing the order. If it weren't for the crappy economy, I think these suits would make pretty quick inroads in the US. European track record, build quality, etc... Right now, I'm not sure most people will spend money to upgrade to a Sailfish, but they should do pretty well with people buying a new suit.

I will use the One at the Gator 1/2, the Furious at the Disney 1/2 and the One again at IM Switzerland and will report back on results.

I've heard good things from a couple people who have moved to the Sailfish suits. I'm actually planning to demo one myself as soon as a friend of mine gets his in (we're the same size). Looking at the speedsuit as well since so many races down here don't allow wetsuits.

I talked to Jan last week to sign Viktor Zyemtsev, he didn't want to uncover what neoprene he's using for top suit, but it's not Yamamoto. Also he didn't express much interest in US Ironman market (probably jut not ready for this season) that Viktor can make appearance to - unless it was just a trick to keep the bonus schedule down.. we getting suits shortly
