Stupid training injuries... Can't Post

It seems I'm always worried about overtraining injuries (ITB, Runner's knee, Achilles tendonitis, plantar facscitis, etc) at some point during the season but always seem to do something worse to myself by accident... Today, while stopping to turn around at the midpoint of my run, I rolled my ankle over the edge of the road...and had to run/walk all the way home. Anyone else do more damage to themselves than the training does or is it just me?

After a 10 hour ride in the hot sun -- I shut my head in the door of my van -- the headache/concussion lasted about two weeks and I won't even comment on the stupid things I've done mountain biking. So no, it's not just you.

Rolled my ankle on a pot hole. Wasn't even looking. Duh.

Stupidest "injury" - a saddle sore that was so painful I couldn't handle 20 kms on the bike and had to sit out a sprint triathlon.

if those are all injuries you have, you need to reevaluate your training in the first place. [you said you were "worried" about them, not sure if that means they're a real concern, or just a worry]

If I get hurt it is always because of careless things while training; overuse stuff. Knock on wood it's been awhile since I did something like roll an ankle.

Pacing a youth cross-country team that I coach. I turned to make sure my group was still together, hit a dip in the path, rolled my ankle, cut my leg, and took down about 4 of the runners I was "coaching". About a month before I was running pain-free.

Kind of the same thing here. Last night I did something really stupid.
Last night was another track workout and It was suggested I try a shoe with more support like the Mizuno Wave Rider (I use Zoot exclusively now). When I put the NEW Shoes (mistake 1) on, I loaded in my custom foot levelers, but the ankle kept slipping, so I put the original insoles back in (mistake 2). I then went to the track even though I had just finished a strength training session that included leg extensions, leg curls, and squats (mistake 3). My legs were already cooked (mistake 4), so I went to massage therapy to have them worked on (mistake 5). I then tried to hammer out the track workout.

My left quad feels like it's ripped apart. Now I'm not sure if I can do my track workout for Friday.

Technically not even training, but on my way to the car to go to the gym...came out the front door, steps were wet with frost (they were, at the time, artificial decking material), I slipped off of them. Got back up, went back inside--yelled up to my husband "Hey, be careful on the way out. The steps are slippery."

Turned around, went back out...slipped off the top and landed lock-kneed on the ground on my bad leg (bone on bone). Got bone bruise that put me out of running for a good 6-8 weeks.

a few come to mind;

- Stepped on a pine cone while running at night, rolled my ankle hard. Actually, I've done this 2 other times both the others were with rocks though.

- Tagged my foot on the sidewalk and did a faceplant because a portion was protruding 6" up from a tree root under it.

I was running at night when my friend had to use a bathroom so we stopped at the rec center. Consequently I lost my night vision for a bit. I was running on the sidewalk and ran into a guy wire for a utility pole. Both were set into the sidewalk so the wire was in line with the pole. I saw the pole but not the wire in front of it. Scrape on face and a chest-wall injury for my trouble.

Re: Stupid training injuries... [Johnny99] [In reply to] Can't Post

Last Sunday towards the end of an easy bike ride, coming around a roundabout. As I warned my companions behind me about the wet leaves, I skidded and fell. Initially thought it was just a bruised hip, but it seems like some glutes strain which is also affecting my quads. So, no running, and no kicking in swimming. It was stupid on my part as I was on my brakes. Luckily it happened on my recovery week and at this time of the year.

I have been riding but its painful at the start. I have to do things I hate like Elliptical trainer. How do people do these machines on a regular basis?

My running partner, a 2yo pitbull, saw a squirrel and ran thru the back of my right leg. I was on the ground before I knew what happened. Ribs and knee hit hard and have been sore for 2 weeks.

I think I managed to crack a bone in my finger when another swimmer got me with the edge of their hand paddles. The skin was strangely green and purple for a couple painful weeks afterwards.

Two winters ago I was running with a group, about 2 miles in I slipped on some ice did a 180 in the air and seperated my left shoulder, ran home in pain and drove myself to the ER. I couldn't run, bike or swim for two months.

After an early morning ride this spring, I came back cold, dehydrated and hungry. Fell down the stone steps to the cellar in my cleats, banging up a knee and an elbow. I went into shock, made it into my 1st floor flat before fainting in the kitchen. Fortunately my face broke my fall, on the kid´s high chair - smashed that up, woke up with my MiL looking down at me saying ´Ohmygod!´, smashed up my lips pretty well but fortunately no dental damage.

Not my finest moment.

Years ago I was doing a LOT of skiing and during the summer was skydiving every weekend. Yet the only injury I have from that period of my life is a knee that required surgery from chasing/playing with my lab in a field. He zigged, I zagged and down I went.

I was on a ride and miss-clipped in the middle of a busy intersection.... crushed the boys on my top tube and fell over. I wasn't sure what hurt more the embarrassment or the pain.

I have to many stories of hurting myself while training but i am a naturally uncoordinated individual.... The best part is I just bought rollers to train on. I'll post a video of that one day to give everyone a good laugh.

I broke the second to the littlest toe on my left foot by kicking my lane mate's foot. We were both swimming breast stroke. It happened in like August and it still hurts sometimes.

I just mean it seems when things are going well training-wise SOMETHING always derails it at some point in my training plan...usually for a short period (luckily). My training is fine but I have been through numerous setbacks..lots of them self-induced (ie. ankle rolling) over the years.

Re: Stupid training injuries... [dougnut] [In reply to] Can't Post

This spring, 1 week before my planned season opener (Du Nats), I went down hard on a solo training ride and ended up with an (open) collarbone fracture, concussion, and the kick butt road rash associated with the impact. Just when I had started to forget how bad it sucks to use skin as a braking surface... another lasting reminder.

You are not alone.
