Looks like fun!

You know, I haven't seen water like that since I was last in Hawaii in '88. (just don't see it in Oklahoma...)

If I remember, the trick is to dive under the breaking wave and surface on the other side; after that, its a matter of up and down swimming over swells and staying cool.

Is that right? I know this is ST, and a raft of "experts" will chime in with the usual blather about folks who don't belong in the water (most of which I genereally agree with), but a few positive comments and tricks would be refreshing.

I offer to send the first positive responder a pair of compression socks for his troubles...

yes you are right . In waves like that you have to time coming up on the other side so you can breathe and go right back under for the next wave until you are passed the waves. Hopefully where you start swimming in line with the shore you are past the wave line and only have to deal with swells.

I knew I could count on ST for a few TNT cheap-shots. Unless they are wearing fins I think you can cut them a bit of slack.

Although funny, the TNTer being escorted out of the water is NOT the best part of this pic.

The Blueseventy dude getting tossed in the back left is F'n priceless.

Well! Mr. Manners just won hisself a pair of compression socks. Ain't this grand.

Please PM with address so I can get them out to you.

I say this in conjunction with a public confession. I promised a forum member a tube or two for his guitar amp (with which I hope he has less time - as he is able to once again train). I found the pre-paid, packed, addressed package in my desk drawer yesterday...three months old.

Is it me, or is the lifeguard's hair dry? Perhaps he never even had to go under to make this one.

Going "under" the waves is easy, even for TNTers doing their first OWS. In "normal" conditions, anyone who can swim over 400m in a pool can easily make it out the the buoy and beyond.

It gets MUCH harder though, when the waves are powerful enough to roll you if you time it wrong, and even more importantly, when they come in multilple batteries (of 3-4) with no breaks.

The LA tri conditions weren't super-powerful waves, but they could definitely roll you if you got caught in one, and it was 3-4 wave batteries the whole way out. For me, I always made it under the first 2 wave sets no problem, but the 3rd one would toss me back since I couldn't time it correctly after surviving the 1st two.

I wouldn't dump on TNT for this one. Sure, their athletes are often "noobs", but in general, they're adequately prepared to at least finish. And it wasn't just TNTers who had it rough out there.

The lifeguard must be chuckling about triathletes and their swimming abilities.

Re: This photo should win a prize! [Boudreaux] [In reply to] Can't Post

these ancient top secret methods you speak of are good techniques. They are typically used at something we members of the ST super secret society like to call "the beach" for negotiating the most rarest and dangerous of foes, also known as "waves". Oh crap, there, I've said it and given it all away.

Who told you about our secrets?

I feel sad for her. Before she arrived at the starting line she raised money to find a cure for blood cancers and patient support. Instead of maligning her and Team in Training some STer's should encourage her to continue her training and sign up for another race.
