Tour of the Catskills - ST WINNER Can't Post

Really cool to see this type of race up in that region. Hope it gets a lot of riders and a ton of support - only 2 hours from the city and some good lodging deals...beats the mind-numbing laps in CP and Prospect and the perils of 9W...

How do you even register for a race like that? The website does not say. Bike racing seems very inaccessible. Triathlon and running races are easy - you just check out a website and sign up and show up an race. Bike racing - not so much.

You click on Bigreg. That's what you use to register for bike races.

Most bike races use bikereg.com. Day of license aren't too bad, but if you've a USCF membership you can find bike races on the USCF website as well. Only a rare few bike races use active.com.

Thank you. I had no idea at all. You have opened up a new world to me. Though with my bike handling skills, perhaps I'm better off sticking to tri anyway.

only cat4's and above can race. You have to start as a cat5... so unless you're already racing you wouldn't be eligable to race. Moving from a cat5-cat4 takes about a season... but you can do it quicker if you really want.

In any case, I would highly recommend giving bike racing a try. It's a new world indeed! :-)

They added a Cat 5 field for this race (meaning, basically anyone can race)...should be a great weekend.
I'm just hoping to finish both days, the loops are some tough riding!

I'm registered too and ready to face the enemy... HILLS. One advantage racing in the parks has, it's flat. But this will be a great weekend.

Dude - Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!!

Great race! I heard it was an epic race with rain on day 1 and some great support. I hope this race sticks for a long time. I wish I could have made it, pregnant wife, mother in town to shop for nursery and the last 10 months filled with IM training I had to sacrifice a weekend to the family...hope to be there next year.

Congratulations!!!

Re: Tour of the Catskills [Bouker] [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Bouker, finally all that long distance triathlon training paid back and I got to race my first 2 day "stage" race. This was my third cat-4 race after upgrading from the cat-5 driving school and we all had a blast. The catskills are simply fantastic for riding, barely any traffic and incredible scenery. Lot's of small towns with quite some spectator support, good places to eat and only 2 hours away from nyc.

Saturday gave us more than 3000 feet of climbing over 52 miles, lot's of rain but at least the temperature was pretty mild. In the second half I essentially got dropped on every hill from the lead group and had to constantly grind my way back into it. The flats were no problem, but with the 3 and 4 fields combined, it shattered the peleton fairly early on. At the end I had lost 29 seconds to the leader, plus 15 seconds for the time bonuses. At this point, even placing in the top ten was out of reach.

Sunday, 4100!!! feet over 52 miles, with one section that went up something like 1400 over 5 miles. I had started an early 12 mile solo break away, reaching the bottom of that climb 75 seconds before the chase group and got luckily swallowed with only one more mile to climb. With 16 miles to go, I went off solo again but this time had a "partner" who mostly sat on my wheel to protect his yellow jersey leader. We still went as hard as we could and it was enough to finish 80 seconds before the main chase group. Enough to take the yellow jersey - - - I swear they gave me one :) pictures should be up soon on their website.

This race should become a classic in the north-east, and how cool is it to have a cat 5 race added to it...?

Oh, and I'm feeling no pain in my legs and went running this morning...
