Travel and Training
Can't Post
I originally nixed my idea of doing a 70.3 because I will be doing business travel for three weeks in Europe, and thought the dates would be during the peak training weeks. I just re-checked my calendar, and it turns out that the weeks I will be gone will be 12-9 weeks outside of my race. Although some of the places I will stay may have fitness equipment, the only thing I can count of being able to do is run and use my stretch cords. My question for you guys is this: how much of an effect do you think this will have on my training, and do you have any tips on how I could try to make training and triathlon travel work? There's not a lot of resources out there on triathlon training and travel.

I have a co-worker that is a strong Ironman athlete (10 hours). He travels a great deal. He carries with him his pedals and a wrench. He goes in the gym at the hotel and puts his wheels on the stationary bikes in the hotel gym. Does not ask for permission but just does it. Never been told to stop.
I don't travel very much any more. What would be difficult for me is going out the night before with clients/prospects and then getting up early enough to workout.

I have always booked hotels based on the gyms they have. If you are traveling to one location longer than the others, find a local bike shop to see if they rent bikes or trainers. Another option is to find a gym in the area and pay the daily membership fees.

I spent about 12 days in Australia 2 years back leading up to 2 half IM's that were taking place a few weeks after my return. I just ran and swam a lot, and used stationary bikes at our hotel when I had a chance. You'll be fine. Just cram in the swimming and biking with focus weeks before you leave and then take your trip as a "run focus" time.
