Tri suit too much for half ironman?
Can't Post
I am gearing up for next year, since prices are super low right now and was curious if anyone has had success using a tri suit Vs. a top and shorts in a 70.3? Are they hotter? Do they fit comfortable? Any opinions would help. Thanks

here is my tri suit story, was doing a long cour duathlon, during the second run I had to use the porta potty, #2 so I had to sit, the floor of the porta potty was covered in piss and the suit fell into a puddle.....
last time I used a tri suit.
As it turns out, what you have is less important than what you do with it...

Works great if its a non-wetsuit race but if you have a long torso they are a pain in the ass for fit not to mention pocket placement leaves something to be desired.
Finished the season with a couple olys and a 703 in a 1pc but next year I'll be back in a 2pc

After I got my DoSoto suit several years ago I'll never again compete in 2pc. (Done 10 IM's and a lot of shorter races in the desoto 1pc).
It's just more comfortable, no pressure on the stomack and cooler. The pockets holds better on the run - don't jump up and down. No shafting in the armpits (used to have shafting problems since 2pc shirts glides up). And it covers the entire back on the bike - no red strip between the top and bottom.
You need (of course) to find a brand that fits you, with a good placement of the pockets - and learn how to handle it during "pit stops".

That's more of a personal preference. I've done HIM's with both, right now I like 2 piece better cuz I mix and match tops.
You're going to have to try it for yourself in training.

LMAO........ HAHAHHAHAHHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)
I feel for you brother. Had to take a poop in the woods while running and I guess I did not pull down enough. Plop right in my shorts. Luckily there was a stream there to wash a bit. I had to run back to preschool to pick the lil snot nose one up and it was right around the time the place was packed. And its a small place!

The Kiwami Kaiman is fantastic, and built just for that 1/2! Tons of pockets, so you shouldn't need a race belt, and the most comfortable garment you'll ever wear.

Used one in a half back in 2000, had to take a potty break at the run turn around, good thing there was a house who had a bathroom i can use but this was in the province so it was a bathroom that just had a cemented floor and a really low toilet bowl, was butt naked because had to pull down the suit all the way down to my ankles and a lady who i asked for a bucket of water came in and slid the bucket with a big smile on her face LOL good thing i was sitting down if not the only thing i could think of using to cover myself was my race #!!

2nd on the Kiwami Kaiman. I used it for the entirety of a full Iron and it was fine. Well, I used it in the swim, rolled the top down and put on jersey/shorts for the ride (shorts for padding, jersey for sun protection), and put it back on for the run. I'd almost rather put on a full run kit for the marathon, but the pockets on the Kaiman make it a no brainer! Gel flask in one underarm pocket, salt tabs in the other. Two pockets on the legs for personalized nutrition things and pockets in the back. All that, and more aero than any cycling kit. Just as if not moreso than a 2 piece.
Bathroom breaks are the only downfall, but so long as you're careful it's a non-issue.

I used the 2xu elite tri suit this year for Florida 70.3 and had no problems over heating. I would recommend one without pockets for a non-wetsuit race, , because they create a lot of drag. Then just stuff your gels under the leg grippers, but make sure you put some glide in that area first.

Desoto 1pc for everything from sprint to IM. Best suit I have ever owned.

Depends on the fit. I have an orca from a few years ago- havent done anything longer than a sprint in it. if you have a long torso for the size range, you'll end up with the thing pulling up a little too hard on your junk- mine tended to bunch in the area due to the tension. Chafed like a mofo on the bike- and because of my position on the bike, it was impossible to get it unbunched. not fun.
Anything longer I've worn 2pieces.
if it fits- and fits correctly? go for it

I used the DeSoto Forza for Mooseman last year and was very happy with it.
The only downside was that when I was done, there were two nasty vertical cuts on either side of my belly button where that patch of cloth anchors the zipper. It had been rubbing all race but I never felt it until afterwards. It hurt then though.
So I emailed DeSoto about it and they told me to send it in. I did and they sewed a nice little patch of smooth material over it and sent it right back, no charge. I'll use it again in 2010

Another vote for 1-piece. Until recently, my only school uniform was a one-piece, so I've raced two halves, 3 Olys, and countless sprints and dus in it. All the swims have been wetsuit legal, though.

I see more people in two piece suits. If you deicide to use a one piece make sure to use it some in training to make sure it works for you. I like my one piece in shorter races but for 70.3 or 140.6 I like 2 piece.

+1 on the Kaiman. It's super-light, breathes well, and has pretty good coverage on the back. It has a ton of pockets, two of which are pretty big and four of which are pretty small. The small ones are really good for keeping small things (like gels and chapstick) handy and easily and quickly accessible. If you're worried about the pockets creating drag in a non-wetsuit swim, get a swim skin. My only regret is that, since I needed it fast, I didn't opt to have my name printed on it, which is a pretty cool option.
The Desoto suits are nice, but run a bit too big for me. As for 2xu, I thought the fabric was a heavy and wouldn't breathe well enough to keep me cool on the run.

I love tri-suits for 70.3's or lower.
It's nice to have something that's not really going to move on your body very much during the race and it saves you from having to change into anything else.
One thing I'd suggest is that you ensure the suit you get has enough padding in the seat if you're going to use it for a half IM. My Orca is OK for Olympic or lesser bike distances, but the half is a lot of saddle time for that one.

I raced my first 1/2 in a zoot ultra trisuit this fall and had no problems at all. I didn't need a bathroom break but wasn't worried if I did, all you have to do is practice a few times with it and your good to go. I raced in the same suit all summer in the Mississippi heat and never once even thought about overheating (it is a non issue).

That's right...the Kiwami stuff you can completely customize with logos or name. Not many will do that. I don't think I've ever had to go "sit down" to the bathroom in a half, so if you plan well, that will not be an issue. Great suit; Great service. There's a reason many of the pros decide to wear Kiwami.

I can't adjust my "junk" adequately in a one piece, so I am all about the 2 piece suits now.
