USA still leads medal count, looking into the final days events... Can't Post

USA is looking to clinch the medal count.

The USA are heavy medal favorites in track and field, all volleyball, bmx cycling, baseball, softball, water polo, taekwondo. these are all areas where china is not present except female beach volleyball.

china has left: diving and table tennis

The USA's t&f alone should get them some cushion. they should sweep the 400 and get that relay.

It just does not look like there is enough depth for china to close at this point. I can't believe how far all the other countries are as well. usually germany is up there for the summer games. A downsized russia is holding there own. the common wealth is not doing good but better than germany.

this will be an interesting ending but not a surprise based on what is left.

yeah, but we're getting our asses handed to us in Golds, which I think is how every other country counts who's "winning". We spin it in our favor here in the US...

"getting our asses handed to us in Golds, which I think is how every other country counts who's "winning"."

They should just do it as a points sytem - 3 points for a gold, 2 points for silver and 1 point for bronze. Then talley it up at the end and whoever has the most points wins.

Yeah, I did find that a bit odd coming here. Golds first, then Silvers and Bronze for the tie-breakers.

If we do it that way, China has 183 points. USA has 162 points.

Ask the guys that got both Bronze and Silver if their medals together are worth just as much as a GOLD.

Sorry boys, you just haven't got enough golds and thats how the IOC calls it. Looks like you'll be 2nd with maybe us in 3rd or 4th. Thats silver for you in case you missed it !

Didn't we take care of you in the late 1700s?

Seriously, if the US wins the most medals and is second in golds that will be a fabulous result. Either is a great accomplishment so hats off to the Chinese, but our result is pretty damn impressive. I would imagine the Chinese are disappointed and suprised that they do not have more total medals.

Well, china lost in some areas but gained in more (project 119 ?). Some nations i feel slid down the table at these games and underperformed. What do i care ?, we're still ahead of the aussies and thats all that counts ! :)

I note that China did very well in sports that are judged (i.e., diving, gymnastics) and not as well in other sports which are timed results (i.e., swimming, track and field). Just thought that was interesting. Of course, I realize this is just a sample of all medal events and that I'm just making one observation out of many possible.

China has traditionally been strong in diving, gymnastics, etc. So it shouldn't really be a surprise, or too much should be read into the fact that that they did well there. There were a few funny results, but on balance, the # of medals there reasonably reflects where they stand internationally.

...and now...on Thursday afternoon U.S. time...the gap would be even closer if using the 3-2-1 point system. However, if you went to a 4-3-2 point system the results would reverse. Without actually looking at which events had a tie for a medal, you could construct a 6-4-2 point system that would allow the splitting of overall points. If that were used, China would still be up by a fraction (as of Thursday afternoon 380 pts to 374 for the U.S.).

Of course, the exact same situation then allows the U.K. to be in 3rd vs Russia in a few of these instances (or should I say puts Russia in front of the U.K. if you are only looking at Gold medals).

Either way, I believe these Olympics have been a huge success for some, and huge disappointments for others (U.S. Track seems to be having a difficult time this Olympics). In particular, I am celebrating, what appears to be, a larger than normal number of "older" athletes in various sports (including those in their 40's, 50's, and even 60's!).

You know? it doesn't matter how we count it. It is pretty impresive the amount of medals the US has.

wait, China would win the 3-2-1 system and the 6-4-2 system? Damn, are you sure?

What about a 9-6-3 system?

(I know, you were going for whole numbers to allow for ties, but I couldn't help myself)

I agree. This may be the biggest untold/undertold story of the Games.

Not to take anything away from the athletes, but I think USOC will score this one a disappointing underperformance just based on world rankings going into the Games. Which goes to show that the performing to expectations is more difficult than being a superachieving underdog.

Re: USA still leads medal count, looking into the final days events... [flim-mike-bunz] [In reply to] Can't Post

How does the medal count look if we agree that synchronized diving, synchronized water ballet and anything done on a trampoline aren't real sports?

And while I'm at it, does anyone object to giving the equestrian medals to the horses instead of the ballast? Does that help or hurt the U.S.?

I'm not sure I fully understand where this is coming from, but it seems I'm pretty annoyed that synchronized anything is a "sport". I mean where does it end? Couldn't you just double the number of "sports" at the Olympics by synchronizing everything? Synchronized 100 meter sprints; synchronized Steeplechase? Heck, I might even pay money to watch synchronized boxing.

Soapbox over. I'm feeling much better, thanks.
Stephen

What's going on with the USA track team? They are usually great but their medal tally doesn't seem so good as what I remember of recent olympics.

If you look at medals per head of population we're (New Zealand) are in second place! I haven't watched the women's bmx yet but we've got the #1 ranked rider in the world so there's hope for another medal before it all ends. Hats off to Jamaica. Fantastic performance.
