Using Bar-end shifters with drop bars?? Can't Post

If you mount Shimano Bar-end shifters to the ends of standard drop bars, can you run the cable entirely under the bar wrap, or do the cables have to be out? Thanks.

I run it for the first couple of inches of the drops and then exit. Running it all the way seems to bring a lot of friction into the system and makes it harder to keep adjusted.

Thanks. I want to convert my Felt S-22 to use drop bars as I don't race much anymore. However, trying to do it without spending too much money. I should only need bars and brake levers. Is using the bar-ends on drop bars a passable alternative to integrated levers? I've never used the bar-ends except for with aero bars. Thanks again.

Its not as easy to shift as STI, but better than downtube shifters. I run them on my commuter/touring bike in friction mode.

The guys at rivendell just run the first couple inches under the tape:

Bar-end shifters with drop bars was fairly common into the 90's. This is what they were designed for. I used to shorten some bars to bring the shifters closer to where my hands are.

90's? Bar end shifter were that hot lick when I was 16 in 1972. If you didn't have 'em, you wanted 'em.

Ok, so in addition to fat and slow, I'm old, too.
