What building a base does for you:
Can't Post
So, I started my training last year around December. I had 4 races planned. Duathlon Nats long course, Eagleman, Devilman Half in mid Sept., and B2B Full in Nov. I did decent at du nats, but couldn't tell about my time because I cramped up on the bike (due to trying to accelrate too fast going around some slow dude:) ) I sucked on Eagleman due to poor training. I trained a lot, but with my HRM, so I paced too much, not how you should be training. I since let the battery die on it. Devilman blew because I moved this summer and started school again (teacher). I didn't train much at all (literally about 6 times in 6 weeks!) and it showed. I was supposed to do B2B last weekend, but bailed because I didn't touch my bike but 2x in 2 months for a total of 37 miles, didn't swim more than 4 times in those 2 months, and ran maybe 8 times in 2 months-since my last crappy race.
I was shocked today when my wife and I did Richmond's Half Mary.
I put out a 1:50:10 or so without running at all in 2 weeks, and only running 8 times total for less than 30 miles since Sept. I was shocked. I know it isn't the fastest pace, but I never thought I would do so well. I also didn't stop once. Not even for nutrients (think of nacho libre saying that).
I also shocked myself at the beginning of this year by placing 2nd overall in a 5k when I didn't do anythign but long slow miles. Pretty cool. So the moral of story, putting in good training time does actually pay off, even if you don't feel it.
Looking forward to next year and will actually complete B2B this time, since I know I can do it!

If you bail again next year let me know I could use the entry. Nice story and half decent run now HTFU and post this on Beginner triathlete where they can use it ! Just joking hope next year works out better for you.

Good for you!
I think some people have done this for so long, they forget all of the steps on the journey. Hope you make it to B2B next year.
